Should I attempt to raise my SAT Reasoning or Subject Test scores?

Hey CC,

I recently got my SAT reasoning score: 700 CR, 700 M, 580 W, superscored 2020.

My past subject test scores are 730 M2, 640 MBio, 530 Chemistry, 640 US History.

I'm applying to a couple of schools that allow the January SAT to be taken, so I would like to take that opportunity to raise either my subject test scores or reasoning test scores.

Which one should I take in January, the reasoning or subject tests?
If subject tests, which subjects should I take?

Thanks.

It really depends on what schools you’re applying to and what major. If the school doesn’t look at SAT I writing scores, don’t retake SAT I. If you are applying for math or science major, retake chem and bio. If you are applying for humanities major, don’t send chem or bio and just retake USH (and take World or Lit if you want too).

I second thecollege1 – we’ll be able to advise you much better if we know the school(s) and major(s) you’re looking at.

Sorry about not including colleges/majors. I should have included it in my original post.

I’m looking to major in Environmental Engineering.
The schools that I will be applying to are: Carnegie Mellon, Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore, Kenyon, Whitman, and RPI, and maybe a few more.

Thanks for the help!

I’d definitely recommend trying to raise the SAT reasoning (particularly writing) if you’re applying to schools like Swarthmore and Harvey Mudd. Best of luck :)

Thanks diana2012! Good luck to wherever you’re applying!

I forgot to note that I got a 32 on my ACT. Does that make up for a lower SAT score, or should I still take the reasoning test?
