I just took the SAT for the first time (I'm a junior) and I got a 780 M, 740 W and a 570 CR. Both the M and W are either at or above the 75% percentile for the schools I'm looking at (U Mich, NYU, Carnegie Mellon), but my CR is below the 25% percentile. Should I worry about my CR scores (especially since it was a first try) or do my other two scores balance it out?

I am the exact same way. My CR is 600 and my other two scores are 690, 710, and 11 essay… I think it won’t really hurt you too badly as long as you’re not applying as an english major or anything… besides, since you’re still a junior, you have plenty of time to get your scores up higher.
Basically, that one score will not be the one reason why you’re rejected from a school - everyone has weaknesses and they understand that. Your other two scores are incredibly high, so you should be fine. Just do your best to study, study, study for it in the future! :)

No, the other scores won’t balance out CR. You can avoid math at many colleges, but never reading.

Well I’m not looking to be majoring in anything really english based. I want to be probably a finance major, so math is my biggest subject.

bummmmmmmmmmp

No, other scores do not balance out your CR. Selective schools will be concerned about your reading comprehension skills, no matter what your declared major.

Yeah, what everyone else said - it doesn’t matter what your major is, it still counts, and cannot be balanced out. CR tends to be an issue for a lot of people though - just keep working on it and bring it up somehow. I started the same way my first time and brought it up after practicing a ton before the test.

You should worry about it. You need to study the reading section and retake.

This is horrible advice. A 570 CR score will keep you out of all three schools that you mentioned.

You’re a junior - so start studying! Improvement is very doable.
