I am a CA community college student right now and I'm applying for Fall 06 Econ transfer to Berkeley (first choice). My GPA is 4.0 over a year of classes and I think my personal statement will be very good. The only EC I have is tutoring and short employment and self-taught stuff if it counts.

I keep feeling anxious about my application and worried about not getting in (in which case I'll go to SFSU). With my stats does it make sense for me to worry? I hear that UC mainly goes by GPA but then I hear stories of high GPAs getting rejected...

Also it seems like Berkeley's reputation/quality is subordinate to schools like Stanford and Ivies. After reading some posts I'm starting to feel bad even about going to Berkeley. Do you guys think Berkeley can still stand up to the other elite schools? My 'dream' school is Stanford, but since my chances are super low Berkeley is my second choice.

Do you have any honors contracts of any sort? I always ask this, because being in such a program can increase the chances of an acceptance significantly. But even without the honors contract, your chances should be great if you will have your major prep courses completed by spring. Stanford however is a reach, but I'd still apply with that 4.0 GPA.

An honors program won't matter much if you truly have a 4.0 with all other academic requirements completed.

Please refer to the actual guides out there. Berkeley has a great one. It lists their criteria.

Berkeley is a public school--the best in the country. If you want to take advantage of the HUGE difference in costs and the greatest public school in the country as a CA resident (hence a great opportunity for you that you wouldn't have in other states), then you should go there.

My community college is one of the less desirable types, so it doesn't offer any honors programs (at least it didn't during my first year).

Does anyone know if Stanford counts Filipino as non-Asian? If so, that would be a plus for me. I'd basically be hoping on that, my GPA and an essay about overcoming domestic violence if I applied.

Any school is what you make out of it. Unless you are planning on being a very top student at these schools, I doubt educational quality will differ much.
