Sorry if this is in the wrong area but as of right now I am unsure if I should spend money on applying for college since I don't know if I will be getting accepted.

I currently attend community college and I am planning to transfer to either San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, or Sacramento State University. From the beginning of my freshmen year I had a very rough start. I am currently on my 3rd year of community college and my GPA is 2.3. But after this semester and upcoming Spring 2011 semester I am more than positive I can raise my GPA to at least 2.6. My transcript is covered with a lot of C's,a few B's, one D(I am planning on making it up) and one W.
My concern is that when I apply what GPA will the colleges look at? The GPA I applied with or the GPA prior to the semester I applied for? I should also add that I am 1 class away from completing my general education and two classes away from completing two AA degrees(Social science & Math/Science). Also, since I plan on majoring in Criminal Justice I completed a few of the prerequisite classes and performed very well (A/B).

So should I apply for the Fall 2011 semester and spend $55 dollars. Or are my chances beyond low that I shouldn't.

Well a 2.6 gpa is pretty low man, i wouldn’t apply right now. I would stay one more semester and try to earn as much A’s as possible so it atleast looks good in your transcript. But I really don’t think the chances are high, but you never know

Well looking at my transcripts, it progressed from C’s to B’s. But some of the classes I took were non transferable and it is affecting my current GPA. But would they judge my based off my current GPA or the GPA prior to transfering?

CA colleges, I’m pretty sure, only use your transferable courses GPA to determine your admission.

If you apply now, they will use the GPA for all your transferable courses reported on your transcript to determine your admission. The GPA you earn just before transferring will matter only if you are accepted to a college, as that will determine your final eligibility in demonstrating your competence.

Is your CC in California? Will you complete the “CSU General Education”? 60 units by the end of Sping '11? If so, I think your GPA is fine and you will get accepted as a transfer.

PS: I’m not sure all of the schools you listed offer a Criminal Justice major.

Yes, I will be completing the CSU General Education this semester. Also, I talked to my counselor and he said both SJSU and SFSU offer a criminal justice major.

It actually might do you well to apply to at least 1 of the schools if you don’t want to spend too much on the applications. Maybe pick the one you would like to go to the most and try.

Thanks for the responses. I’m just scared that I won’t get in based on my current GPA. If I knew whether or not they judged my GPA based on the semester prior to transfer I’d feel safe. So I have a very slim chance to get in if i’m lucky?

Not necessarily slim. I don’t think any of the campuses you mentioned are impacted (CSU Sacramento, SFSU, SJSU). The colleges will also give you more priority if you are within their service area (currently living near any of the campuses).

It wouldn’t hurt to apply. Your GPA, at this point, may not be competitive, but remember, if you’re in the “service area” of any of the campuses, you will be given an even better chance of being accepted.

So I probably have a better chance of getting into Sacramento because I am in the San Joaquin area. But the bay area is only 1 hour away. Would having a resident living in the SF area increase chances as a local.

Oh yeah, my counselor told me to apply for that college as well. But i’m trying to move a little farther from home. But I will still be applying to that college because I can’t be too picky.

You might also consider CSU East Bay, which seems like a really nice school that’s not impacted, and they have a Criminal Justice program as well. I’d say you have a really good chance of being admitted there if you applied.

So to get everything straight the CSU will most likely look at the GPA I have before Fall 2011? Also, will doing well in the classes I need for my major help as well?

The most important thing to CSU is that you maintain a GPA of at least 2.0. And yes, they’re going to want transcripts of your grades from Spring 2011 if you’re transferring to a CSU in Fall 2011. If you get a non-passing grade in a course in Spring, they probably will want you to retake it over the summer or something, but they probably won’t revoke you or anything like UC would.

But, as long as you maintain at least a 2.0 prior to transfer, if they admit you with your 2.3 right now, so long as you keep your GPA above 2.0 before you transfer, you’ll still be OK. If you do well in your major courses, I think they will take that into consideration in deciding to admit you, too.

Thanks for the reply.
I’m just worried that I won’t get accepted. Its been a dream to move back home to the bay area and attend a CSU there. What seems to block me from that is my GPA. I know there is a 2.0 minimum and my course is not impacted but I always have doubt of getting accepted. I apply on October 4th. Would having two AA degrees help me more?
I know I should have asked these to my counselor but the next appointment available is after the 4th. Thanks for all the help though.

Are you sure the Spring semester affects your gpa? I talked to my counselor today and she completely devoured my hopes and dreams… what a jerk =. I’m in the same boat as you and it was slightly comforting reading these replies. The counselor told me they only look at your Fall and Winter grades because they have to make a decision by Spring. The classes taken during Spring will count towards your credits but it won’t count towards the gpa. People can use the Spring semester to finish up their required units from what the counselor told me. So I have this Fall and Winter to boost up my 2.2 gpa =.
