Hi, I am at the end of the semester, and I am thinking of dropping Alang. I took ap lit as a sophomore and a got a B+ each semester. She has shown extreme bias over mee during presentation, tests, and essays. I have a b right now, and if I drop at the end of the semester, it won’t affect my grade next semester. And I’m just really disliking the class and her teaching, and overall rudeness. I have also been taking: AP US history and, Physics(honors) at the highschool. I am also a running start student; First quarter I took graphics design and world civilizations (a- in both) This quarter I am taking precalc and environmental science online — next quarter I am planning on taking Spanish 3 and precalc 2. I could take English 101 at the college instead of precalc 2. I am also taking pass-fail environmental stewardship(50 hours of work this semester or 125 for full credit). I am just overwhelmed and want time to dance, volunteer and track. Would it look bad to colleges to drop it now? My dream college is Brown, but i am unsure now because of my grades this year. Are their consequence for being less than part-time? I have two days so any advice or insight would be helpful!
I don’t think you should be focused on whether or not these decisions will impact your ability to attend Brown or any other school. Your focus should be on finding a balance that allows you not to feel overwhelmed. I can’t give you specific class counseling but as a dad I can feel your stress level.
Pursue a schedule that allows you to balance your interests in academics, dance, track and volunteering. When it comes time to apply be true to who you are and hopefully you will find a college that allows you to continue to flourish and be happy. If you need to over stress to get into a school you will likely be overtaxed once there.
Good luck and try to relax in spite of the pressures you feel.
I would not drop the class if you are getting a B.
Your sequence is not typical. Usually AP English Language & Composition is a junior year class and AP Literature is a senior year class. That might possibly explain your overall discomfort with the class and teacher, but overall you are doing well in what is designed to be a challenging, college-level class. I wouldn’t give up.
@Nocreativity1 @Groundwork2022 I am in a really hard dilema where I have night school and exams at the college all afternoon. It is just really hard to make time for anything. My grades have dropped from all as As to Bs this finals week. My last day is tomorrow to drop and I am still in a dilemma. I don’t want my transcript to look worse but I feel my schedule and the class itself is unhealthy and a very negative. experience…
Most kids take APUSH and APEL in 11th grade. What made you take those classes in 10th grade? 10th grade kids usually take honors English/humanities class that requires a lot of reading analysis and writing skills to prepare for APEL. What made you think your teacher is biased against you?
You also have too many EC. You should concentrate on one or two activities with all your passion.
I would withdraw from one of the college classes then, provided they aren’t core subjects. Colleges will not be impressed you are dual enrolled if you are not doing well overall. High school classes should be the priority for a sophomore.
You seem extremely self aware and mature for a sophomore. If you view the class to be “unhealthy” and “negative” follow your instincts. Good luck with your decision.
@Nocreativity1 @Groundwork2022 Hi, sorry if I misinformed but I am a junior. I am planning on taking Spanish 3 and precalc 2 at the college but that would be 5 hours every afternoon so I think I have decided to stay in ap language and choose between those two for spring. Thanks for your help!
You should take College Spanish 3 but be aware this typically requires students to have completed level 3 in HS (1 college level covers more than 1 HS level, even though the HS level is spread over 1 year). Reaching college level 3 (or HS level 4) is important for the colleges you’re aiming for.
You could try and see if you can take College English 1. AP Lang + College English 1 would work, too, as far as colleges go. But you need to be doing well.
