To drop, or not to drop: that is the question.

I wasn't sure where I should post this, so I decided upon posting it here. Basically, I need advice regarding my AP Lang class. I'm unsure if I should drop it or not. I love English in general, and it's my favorite subject. I find that the class would provide me with the opportunity to further develop my ideas and writing in general. The class would enable me to succeed in writing, which will ultimately benefit me for a significant amount of time. However, I don't want the class to negatively affect my GPA. At my school, it's considered the hardest AP class to take, as demonstrated by the fact that there are only two classes dedicated for it. While I know I'll improve my writing, my grades won't be as great as I'd like them to be, as portrayed in some of my recent assignments. I just took a test that I failed, so I know have an F in the class. I know it's only one test, but seeing as how she stated it was the easiest one she would offer, I'm apprehensive. I've always received high grades in the normal English classes(around 95 to 100%+) so one would think I would be able to handle the material, but again, I'm not sure. Should I just drop the class and go to the regular class that would enable me to have more time to devote to my other classes or should I stay in the class and develop my writing skills, while sacrificing my time and possibly grade? I'm indecisive as of now.

Drop it if you’re worried about your GPA. Because the test you took is, according to your teacher, one of the easiest tests she’ll administer in your class, and the fact that you got an F, tells me that you’re going to struggle if you choose to stay.

Hm, your teacher might be giving you more trouble than the AP test is worth. If you’re really apprehensive, drop the class and self-study the subject. It doesn’t really take that much effort if you’re already a strong English student.

First take a couple of AP practice exams and see how you do. If you think you’re good to go, drop the class and save your grade. If you feel you really need teacher instruction, keep the class and try as hard as you can.

But Aero, then they would be putting their GPA at risk. They even got an F on one of the easier tests that their teacher gives.

That’s true, but I should mention that she told us the day before there would be literary terms on the test. I didn’t know and still don’t know all of them:/ There are over 200! I definitely want to take the exam, so I think that’s a good idea to try a few tests out.

Ehhh, is that what you got most of your test wrong on? Then if so, stick with the course.

Essentially, but like I said, she did say it was the easiest test. Just yesterday I had to write an essay in class without knowing what the prompt was:/ She is going to grade it according to how the readers for the AP exam will. I’m sure I didn’t do well on it. I’m still unsure because I have to decide between challenging myself and improving with a B or C:/ or just getting an A(hopefully) in normal English.

See what you get on the prompt. If you’re satisfied with the grade, stick with the class. If you’re not, drop the class immediately. Sure, you’d be challenging yourself by being in AP Lang. But is that challenge really worth the fact that you’d be risking a grade of an A or A+?

I know lots of people will yell at me for this but I think you should keep with it-English is something you love so you need to stick with it and improve your writing. If you might get a B in the class its okay to sacrifice it. But if you will get a C or lower then don’t. However, despite thinking you will fail -you often don’t. To make you feel better, I took Honors CHem as a sophmore. I cried to my Guidiance Counselor thinking I would fail. I didn’t. I got a 92 (weighted) and didn’t meet my standards but I was okay. I learned that I could handle everything so sometimes you
JUST DO IT!

I know, believe me, if I knew I was going to get a B, I would continue to take it. However, I don’t want to risk getting a C when I could be getting an A in the normal class with less work. I already talked with the AP teacher and she said she would grade my essay and then give me advice on what to do. If it weren’t for the opportunity to improve my writing I would have dropped it. I suppose I will wait and see. Thanks for all of your suggestions!:)

Omgoodness, I still don’t know what to do!:frowning: I finally got the drop slip and had my teacher sign it, but then she gave me this speech about how she’s sorry to see me go and how this class is the perfect opportunity for me, and how I’m the perfect person for the class. How am I supposed to react to that? I am back on the fence…if only I had more than 1 1/2 days to decide:(

Do not drop. Period. KK.

Did you not hear that it could ruin my GPA? It seems to make more sense to just get a 4.0 with a 4.5 weighted as opposed to a 3.8 to 3.6 and 4.5 to 4.2 weighted:/ It’s just the idea of improving my writing that’s going to haunt me:( Haha, sorry for making this a venting thread, maybe I should post this in the ranting thread.

Get an A. Don’t drop. kk.

^Ya…that A isn’t going to happen! lol I think like three people in the past few years have gotten them. There’s a reason it’s the hardest AP class out of the 27 offered at my school.

Be one of those people.

If only you could acknowledge that it’s not that easy:/ Just because I got 101% last year in English, doesn’t mean I’m going to get an A this year(unfortunately:/) It’s a nice idea though:)

Dropping is lame.

If you drop an AP, which is suppose to be challenging, how does it look to go to to regular?

I think that’s like, “Oh, I don’t want to handle the challenge. Slack, slack, slack.”

^umm…I’m not slacking! lol, I’m taking two sciences and (possibly) two maths. That’s not slacking:) I’m not sure how the drop would look. She told my class that a few people would have B’s while the majority would have C’s at the end of the semester. Personally, I’m wondering if that’s too challenging:/ Ugg…tonight is my final night to decide!:/

Lol some teachers say that. Don’t trust her.
Do not drop.
