Should I drop math?

i'm currently a senior and i'm applying to uni for finance, comp sci and applied math (depending on the school - i just wanna leave my options open). would dropping my math class senior year look bad?

the problem is that i don't have a lower level class to drop into. i'm currently taking multivariable calc & linear algebra, which i think is calc III? i took BC calc junior year, and ap stats as well as geometry in sophomore year. this is the only math class left that my school offers and i currently have a C- lol

i'm definitely going to work harder during my second quarter if i stay in it, but i just wanted to know if you think it looks worse to not have a math class, or to have one and do awful in it? :p

Computer science and applied math (for physics, chemistry, etc.) use a fairly good amount of multi-variable calculus and linear algebra. I’d stick with the course. Work harder.

thanks for the advice! i’ve been leaning towards staying in because i figure that if i can’t handle this class in a high school setting, i most likely shouldn’t be pursuing those majors in college.

the alternative would be that i drop the class so it doesn’t affect my gpa and try to take it at the local university, which is stony brook.

i’ll probably continue, though.

It depends on the schools you want to go to. The typical super “reach” schools - Ivy’s, Stanford, MIT, etc all like to see that you took the hardest courses offered in your school within your area of interest. If you drop math it will be an obvious omission. It is not about gaining the knowledge but about showing the “passion”.

I applied to Tepper @ CMU early decision, and my other top schools are NYU Stern and Northwestern for applied math. The only Ivy I’m applying to is Cornell, but that’s just to appease my mom :/

If I get in ED I definitely won’t drop because I think it’s important to learn the material even if I end up retaking it in uni, but my main concern is if I have to wait for regular decision results and they see a C on my mid-year transcript.

I feel like I’m over thinking this, haha.

Alright so you applied to Tepper @ CMU ED. Eh… If you get in, I wouldn’t drop. One C won’t “Kill” you for CMU.

^ omg you’re back :)

^Indeed I am. Decided to see what changed in the year and a half I was gone. and I see not much has.
