Should I even be applying to BostoN?

I've had BU on my list of schools I'll be applying to for awhile, mainly as my main "safety" school. If I did end up going there (UGH!) I'd be in the School of Management. I chose BU because I think Boston (the city) looks awesome and because BU actually looks pretty cool. But, given it's high price, notorious reputation for grade deflation, and the fact that I've now read on Business Week's b-school ranking that BU gets a C for job placement (not good if I want to go to grad school), I'm really having second thoughts. As cool as the school and city look, I think it would be a bad move for me academically and financially in the future. So I'm thinking of replacing it with another similar safety, but I'm having a problem finding one. So far my other safeties (not as safe as BU) are Georgetown and UT-Austin.

My stats:
Freshman at CC
4.0 GPA
ENGL I/II, HIST I/II, GOVT I/II, ACCT I/II, ECON I/II, CALC I/II/III, DIFF EQUATIONS, PHYSICS I/II, BUSINESS SPEECH, COMPUTER SCIENCE...think that's all I have/plan to take. Several honors courses sprinkled in there.
SAT: Math - 670 Reading - 770 Writing - 780 (Essay 12) Retaking
ACT: 32 - RETAKING!!!! I HATE SCIENCE IT RUINED MY SCORE!
SAT II: they'll all be over 750, except maybe Math II which might be 730-40.
ECs: Vice President Student Govt., Vice President Honors Society, Press Reporter for Business Club, Member of top college choir. Will be sending in a demo.
Work 35 hours a week for past 3 years.
Essays: I consider myself very dedicated and a substantially good writer, so essays should be good.
Recs: Hmmm...I have some ideas, but I like a lot of my profs so we'll see.

I'm kinda considering Johns Hopkins, UVA, U-Mich, and a LAC if I could find one where I'd have a decent chance. Any advice?

Georgetown is never a safety for anyone.

Neither are any of the above.

I'm considering Georgetown more of a safety given the fact that McDonough admits 30% or so of the applicants and the average SAT and GPA are 1320 and 3.72, respectively. I'm pretty confident.

So, if Johns Hopkins, UVA, U-Mich aren't safeties, which I figured they wouldn't be, what school would you recommend?

1) Safety schools are usually those with 50%+ admit rates.
2) Georgetown looks at your high school GPA, as well.

well i guess that's as safe as i'll get...i'm living on the edge.

you should only consider a safety being a school you will most likely get accepted into, and i can not say you are a sure-admit for g-town.

a safety for you would be like UNC-Chapel Hill

ok i'll check that one out thanks

OSU can be ur safety. When I read on their website, if you have a 2.75 gpa, you can be accepted for sure to its pre-business major. You should take a look, OSU has pretty good accounting/finance program. =)

for UNC-CH, you have to be accepted into the college for at least a semester before transferring to the b-school. Its not hard to get in, 3.3 is considered competitive and once your there the average gpa for a b-school acceptance is 3.5 and the average rejection was 2.9.

thanks adamantine and maddskillz UNC-CH sounds like a pretty cool deal the business school sounds very good too...then again I'd probably end up going to McCombs if I was only accepted to it and UNC-CH (cheaper and a little better ranked), but that's what safeties are for (in case I don't get into McCombs).

yeah dude, look into it...your stats are awesome....UNC-CH, UT-Austin, BU a little more as safety schools, then Georgetown, JHU, UVA, also look into Emory, MIT, Cornell AEM, maybe even Wharton? Im applying to 3 schools in fall 2007, I dont know if your going to apply to all those schools but think about narrowing it down if you do decide to apply to 10+ schools. That spot you take might have been someone elses, who was actually really willing to go there. Best of Luck with everything.

"That spot you take might have been someone elses, who was actually really willing to go there."

Yeah I understand what you mean, I'm just always worried I won't get accepted to the schools I do apply to and then I end up getting stuck here for another year. :( I'm really trying to narrow down my school choices, but many of the schools I'm planning on applying to are truly places I can see myself happy at. Boston, on the other hand, is the first school that I've had second thoughts about even applying to, because of the reasons I explained in the original post.

I plan on applying to Emory and Cornell Economics (CAS), as well as UPenn (Econ, I don't think my chances are good enough for Wharton). I guess the biggest problem I'm having is that I have 10 or so schools, most of which are reaches, that I really like. That's why I was wanting one more safety, and I think UNC - CH would work.

What schools are you applying to?

Yeah I understand why you want to apply to alot of schools. I really think that alot of your schools listed are within reach. 4.0 with good sats and extracurriculars is within reach of most great schools. Before I was also applying to alot but now I narrowed it to UNC,UChicago, and was really thinking about NYU Econ but realized that its not worth 50k. So Stern instead. If your willing to do Econ, look into UChicago and Northwestern also.

Definitely don't even apply. You've made it clear that its not a school you'd be happy to attend. So don't even risk it, because you very well may end up attending your chosen saftety school(s). The very definition of a safety school is one that you know you'll get into and would be happy attending even if it is your least favorite. Duh.

Well I plan on cutting down my school choices to around 8 before I apply, because I don't think I could handle the application process with so many schools. I've checked a lot out and so far I've got:

Brown
Columbia
Cornell (CAS)
Emory (Goizueta)
NYU (Stern)
Northwestern
Chicago
UT (McCombs)
Harvard (I can't resist trying)
Upenn (Econ)
Yale (also can't resist trying)

Like I said in the first post, Boston University is also kinda in there, but I'm not sure if it's worth the money. If I get into UT and BU, I'd most likely go UT for financial and academic reasons (although Boston looks awesome and my dream is to go to a big city up north).

I'm a Texas resident, which ups my chances for McCombs. My friend from the same CC that I'm going to had a 3.9, 1510 old SATs, and did the same stuff as me for extracurriculars (Student Govt, etc.), so we're almost the same as far as applications go. But, he hadn't taken Cal 2 yet, and he never even indicated on his transcipt that he planned on taking it before getting to UT. All of this despite the fact that Cal 2 is required to apply to McCombs, and they admitted him, telling him to make sure to take it over the summer. :) Seeing as I'm taking Cal 3 right now, and I still have a year left, I'd say McCombs can be a safety. But still, I can't bet my soul that I'll get in, and I'm thinking that's what a true safety is.

So I guess now I'm checking out UNC - CH like you said, as well as JHU, UVA, UMich, and maybe USC. It's a really hard decision to go for a bunch of reaches and only have 1 or 2 safeties, because there's always the chance that you don't get into anything...but I'll figure somethin out.

Georgetown (10 char)

that is a huuuuge list of schools.. haha.
good luck with getting all those recommendation forms filled out :]

lol yes it is i'll be clearing some out for sure

brand, try goin for 1 safety, 1 far reach, and like 4 moderate reaches. I think thats how most people do it. Just a suggestion though.

all those ivy's are far-reaches though.
