Should I even send an application?

Male, Asian American
Public school

SAT I' s:
1950, I hope it will improve to 2000+. I took the Dec. 2nd test and it looks like i've only missed 6 or 7 questions total so far...so I am hoping for a 2000+.

GPA W/UW:
3.86 / 3.44 - Ouch I know...took the hardest possible classes all at the same time, killed my GPA. I guess you could say that I am the kid that got the B's and few A's without even studying. I have learned from my mistakes in HS and I will take my new attitude for school into me where I go to college.

Rank:
Top 10%, 35/500

Courseload:
10 AP classes, about 3 C's all together in 10 AP classes (Trimester schedule).

ECs:
Piano 7 yrs
Drums 7 yrs
JV Tennis (10,11)
Varisty Tennis (12)
Tutoring (1 yr)
Chess club (1 yr)
Ping Pong Club
Volunteering at my church doing fund raisers and other things (+200 hours)
Church youth group secretary (10th)
Church youth group VP (11th)
A few others but nothing special...

As you can see, the majority of the EC's are not really school oriented, but instead related with church. I really hope this does not absolutely kill me, but hopefully I can add something in the essays that show my passion for my faith in God.

Employment:
None

Personal hobbies/interests:
Play drums for my church praise and worship team which takes around 5 hours a week to prepare for. Besides music as being one of my major hobbies, I do enjoy computer programming and anything related to the computer.

I plan to major in either biochemistry or biology (pre-med) at whatever colleges I get accepted to. Then hopefully apply to a top ranked medical school for graduate admission.

Schools:

University of Washington
Oregon State University
University of Oregon
University of Rochester
New York University
Pepperdine University
Baylor

I might apply to another school if anyone can suggest a school with a strong pre-med program, and that I may have a chance to still get into (and apply if it is not too late). But with these schools, be honest. I know I can probably get into UW, OSU and OU, but honest about the other ones. I know Pepperdine is a Christian college, and a good testitmony as the essay will help me for admissions. As far as NYU and UR I really want to go to one of these schools.

Thanks for your input in advance.

Your stats sort of look like mine (i'm lazy and just got B's and some A's, and hopefully i'll turn myself around in college.. heh)

University of Washington- slight reach/match
Oregon State University- safety
University of Oregon- match
University of Rochester- not sure about this school
New York University- reach (its getting more and more competitive)
Pepperdine University- match
Baylor- not sure about this school

for pre-med, I would also add Pitzer, which is a liberal arts college in Southern California (consortium school along with Claremont McKenna and Pomona). Also, maybe you want to throw in another reach school like Northwestern.

Thank you SeanMcG!

Most likely a match for Baylor

Thank for your input California-Bolt!

definitely worth sending your applications

haha, thanks...but what you think my chances are at the colleges above? Also include Northwestern University...(I actually forgot to add this to the list of colleges to look at). Probably have a slim chance at Northwestern but its worth a shot.

So are the chances that Sean posted pretty much what my chances are? If so, then thats exactly what I was expecting haha.

What about University of Rochester?

bump111111111111111

If you're applying to NYU CAS, I would think you'd be match/slight reach, more towards the slight reach end. Right now your SAT is a little low, your GPA/rank is good, and your ECs are okay... nothing really special about them (that doesn't mean they're bad though. Maybe you just didn't elaborate on them here and they really are pretty good).

Thanks calhart12, yes I will be applying to NYU CAS. I am very suprised that someone thinks i'd be a match/slight reach. Maybe you didn't read my stats correctly. 3.44 UW , 3.86 W. Not 3.86 UW. So ya...I will have to get some really good recommendations/essays to get in. I am hoping and praying that my SAT will be 2100+.

And reguarding my rank...

I think that we have 2 different ranks , one for UW and one for W.

Do you know which one colleges will look at?

My UW is something like 30-40/500

and W is around 15-25/500

yeah... I did misread that. Your good class rank does help some though. I'm not sure which one they'd look at, but both are good. I guess I would put you at a reach if your SATs stay the same and a slight reach if your scores are 2100 plus.

Keep in mind that I, like many others here, have not been accepted into a college yet and want to know my chances. So that's just my opinion and it may not be very valid.

Well colleges tend to look at unweighted GPAs if they're provided since there's no such thing as a Weighted GPA in college. A 3.44 and a 1950 SAT is going to make NYU a Reach. University of Rochester will be a Match/Slight Reach.

But don't colleges put weighted GPA's in consideration when looking at their applicants as well? My courseload at my high school is probably the most difficult in my graduating class (and probably hardest ever in the history of the high school). I think I am the only one who has even taken 10 AP classes as my school. My Junior/Senior years will be pretty much exactly like college. Almost full college courses...Hopefully NYU will take my courseload into consideration.

If I regret anything in highschool besides not trying my hardest in my classes, would be that I stacked too much on at once. I know that if I stuck with 7 or 8 AP's in the 4 years I am pretty sure my GPA would be near 3.9. But since I decided to add that extra class, my GPA has taken a huge hit because the homework/projects and tests were all too much for me to handle at times.

Well, yeah weighted GPA's are considered, but the UW GPA is regarded more highly...

I had a 3.89 W GPA and something like a 3.5+ UW GPA with a 2060 SAT and got rejected by NYU (2010 admissions).

I see...thanks for the information...

I see...thanks for the information...

dvlfnfv5, did you apply to Stern or CAS?

I am a Baylor alum and my daughter just got accepted there. You should have no problem getting in to Baylor and you may even get a scholarship. Do apply and do it soon! Baylor has changed their app system this year...last year Baylor used rolling admission and they got something like 20,000 applications. They had a waiting list by January, which was a first and the largest and most talented freshman class in the history of Baylor. They reported that the average SAT was 1230 (V&M only).

I don't think you have to worry.

This year they sent out follow-up questionnaires in mid-November to applicants asking about their level of interest prior to sending out acceptance letters. They also asked a couple of questions that were not on the original online application.

Baylor is a very good school with a strong science program. It was a good school when I went there many years ago and is even better now. Good luck!

Thanks for the input! I really hope I get into University of Rochester...anyone familiar with that school think I will get in?
