Hey, just wondering if you guys get your teachers gifts for the holidays? does it seem like you're totally kissing up or is it good

depends on your intention. if it's just to get them to like you more, there's something morally reprehensible about that.

If you get them something small, like a coffee cup or fancy notepad, it seems like a nice gesture. However, buying them, you know, the world's largest apple, they might get suspicious of your intentions.

What if you just got them cards? That way, you'll be letting them know that you appreciate them, but at the same time, you won't seem like a suckup for getting them gifts.

I didn't know people still did this.

It ended suddenly in the 8th grade here. Only the girls and some guys got gifts. But I'm thinking about getting all my teachers and a small circle of my friends small gifts.

I'm more or less friends with my teachers; I don't just go to their class and do the work they assign to me--I come in and chat with them and such. I think for me it's appropriate to give gifts.

When I give gifts I usually give food; I guess I have the urge to feed people. :p But this year I'm thinking about giving small donations to charity in some of my teachers' names. (Actually, my world religions teacher suggested this as a gift idea--not for teachers in particular, just in general.) I also got a pretty notebook for an English teacher that I had last year. It's got a painting on it that was a recurring theme in my class's off-topic discussions. (It's John Singer Sargent's portrait of Lady of Agnew, who, in the painting, looks just like one of the girls who was in that class.)

The notebook, and the Monet calendar that I'm going to give to my French teacher, are both items that I bought during my travels last summer--you know how you get souvenirs for people when you're overseas? So they're not just Christmas gifts. They're also thank-you gifts for teachers having written recommendations for me. ...So I should probably give a card or something to my counselor, too. Hmmm. I don't know him as well as I know my teachers... so a card will be all...

Okay, I'll stop thinking "aloud." :p

Last year I gave my friend's calculus teacher this "calculus mix" CD that had songs with titles such as "Operation Area," "Take It To The Limit," and "Differential Equations." And she wasn't even my teacher.

But yeah...most of the time I just get my teachers movie tickets. It's easy and relatively cheap.

I only get my favorite teachers gifts... aha =) I'm getting my AP Calc and English teachers gifts, and then the two teachers who wrote me reccomendations for college apps (my junior year teachers). I got them little boxes of chocolate with handwritten notes, lol. I usually get them for my first semester teachers every year!

I'm probably going to give my guidance counselor some fudge or something- she's helped me a lot.

I'm giving gifts to the teachers who wrote teacher recs for me as a way of thanking them

I baked cakes for pretty much everyone I KNOW, teachers included. Mostly out of stress-induced baking in anticipation of EA decisions.
My teachers really liked them, though. Some of them were really touched that I thought of them :)

I gave presents (Starbucks gift baskets, who can say no to that?), too, to all the teachers who have helped me in some way regarding colleges over the past several months. This included the teachers who wrote my recommendations, editted my college essays, and looked over my Intel research report.

Some juniors I know are also planning to send gifts to teachers they think they'll be eventually asking for recommendations.

I'm giving gifts to all my teachers who have written me a recommendation letter. It's only nice.

i cant imagine doing that. i like all my teachers but everyone would think im a complete loser if i did that. ehh...

Do you guys think a borders gift card and a thank you note/card for teachers who wrote me recommendations is an appropriate gift?

thank you-note:Yes
gift card-no

^Why not?

What would you suggest for a history teacher, english teacher, and a counselor?

two things: gift card --> good gift. i think so at least. its appropriate and thoughtful without being super/too personal.

and second. virtuoso where do you go to school?

how would i give my gift to my teachers if im really shy in class and I wouldnt want to look like a loser when I am the only one giving it to them? Should i sneak it to them? I'm not really good at this...
