Should I go to a college just to transfer?

Hi,

I want to major in Computer Engineering and the University I want to go to is Virginia Tech, but I'm just worried that if I don't get enough grants/scholarships from VT or enough financial aid, I won't be able to afford it.

There's another University that is very close to home - George Mason University - and since its so close, I can just stay home and only pay for tuition. So now I'm wondering if I should go to George Mason just so I can transfer out of there after my first or second year and into Virginia Tech or UVA.

A friend told me that credits transfer easily between Virginia colleges, is this true? Even if it is, I'm worried that all my Computer Engineering credits won't transfer and in the end, I'll have to pay for a fifth year of college when my credits don't transfer.

So assuming I get accepted into both, and assuming that going to George Mason for the first or first 2 years will save thousands of dollars, will it be worth going through the hassle of transfer? Or is transferring between Virginia colleges really that painless and easy?

Thanks in advance!

You should talk to the academic counselors at your high school, or call the admissions & records people at either of the two colleges. I'd imagine this woudn't be too uncommon of a question.

First of all, from what I've been told, GMU is an excellent school for acquiring a job especially in your field. You probably live in Fairfax, and the job you get, whether its at Tech, etc., is going to most likely be located in Fairfax because it is known as one of the biggest as far as computer corporations and defense corporations are concerned. Why not just go to NVCC and then transfer out with guaranteed admission if your desperate to go to V tech.
