So I’m worried since I did 3 extra things my junior year that colleges will see that as padding my resume.
I just joined Project Support (neurotypical kids interact with those who have disabilities) this year, though I don’t have any leadership positions. Meetings are once a month.
I made an autism project. I went to an elementary school and talked about autism/lead simulations to experience what it’s like to have autism. It was pretty successful so I’m planning on hopefully going to more schools before the end of the school year.
My friend also made a health club and I’m VP of that.
I have other EC’s, of course, but should I include all of these or take one out? Because I don’t want colleges to see it as me padding the resume.
Thanks!
If you have the space on the app you may as well include them. At worst they’ll just be ignored.
I’m having the same problem right now. I think you should include them, just make sure you highlight your accomplishments in them.
Are you autistic? If so, I think the second one, especially, is impressive.
Yes, you should include them if you participated in them. Make sure you are getting interested and spending effort on on some of your activities.
If you have the room on the app to do so, then yes add them.
Thanks guys.
+bodangles No but my sister is and that’s what inspired me to start it. So more people know about autism.
I would suggest if you reference any of the ECs in your essay, definitely include them!
Also, my son used all his “EC” (activities) spots in his application, and it did not appear to hurt him. I don’t think they would have ten (?) spots if they didn’t expect some people to fill them up.
I would also consider anything that was a lot of time in a short span, like 20 hours over a month, could be listed as well, like a fundraiser or something.
If your sister is then absolutely include them and even find a way to talk about them but emphasizing the postive what you learned. I had more than 10 acitvities and some of my volunteer spots seemed a little weak by themselves so I combined them into one spot if the activities related to each other (eg volunteering at my old elementary school, volunteering with youth groups, all kids). Seems like your first two relate. If you can claim founder on the health club (assuming you really are) then I would put that separately.
@SaphireNY Yeah that’s a good idea, the theme can be disability-related.
I’m not my friend is but she wants to make me VP of the club.
@rhandco Yeah I definetely want to mention a couple of them, though I’m thinking of the ones I’ve been in 10+ years. But I think I can include the autism project in one of my essays, since I found it meaningful.
