Should I major in English or MIS (Management Information Systems)

I’m a senior in high school who can’t decide between the two…English is my passion, but I also need to think about getting a job after college. My sister was an MIS major and she’s doing well good financially. I also want to do well in that respect and I’m kind of interested in computers. My initial plan is to major in English and minor in Mathematics (which I kind of cringe at because I’m not good at math, but think it might make me look more employable). I’m also considering doing a certificate program in computing to help with my employability. I’m thinking about continuing that course and pursing a Masters of Science in MIS With that masters, I could get a good job and maybe be able to pay for an MFA in Creative Writing if I want (I want to be a published fiction author one day). Am I thinking too far a head?

  1. For many undergraduate schools, formally declaring a major is not required until three or four semester are completed. This would allow you to take a few survey-level course in both areas, to ascertain how your "really feel," with some actual collegiate MIS and English academic experiences.
  2. English/Creative Writing is wonderful, especially if you are likely to enjoy a principally Ramen Noodles diet for a few decades after your Bachelor's is awarded. ;)
