Should I notify Dartmouth about National Merit?

I was named a National Merit Finalist and I was wondering if I should email Dartmouth and have that information added to my file. Would it help my chance of admission or do they really care? I assume a large portion of each class are national merit finalists so I wonder if it would really matter.

Thanks

As long as you reported you were a semifinalist, you’re fine. Since 15,000/16,000 become semifinalists, usually they can assume you moved to the next ‘step’ (since I’ve been told that a large majority of those 1,000 spots are for those that overperformed on the PSAT or simply didn’t apply after becoming semifinalists.) Also, finalists are certainly not a ‘large portion’ of any college anywhere. Schools with the top number of finalists have fewer than 300, and even if the class size was as small as 1,000, that’s less than 30%.

It’s a good excuse to write them and let them know of your continued interest.

I wrote them and let them know along with a couple of other recent awards I won. But it was basically just to let them know I’m still very interested, mainly just an excuse to contact them, like standrews said.

raychacha, I am in a similar situation. What did you send them, exactly? A letter and/or an e-mail, and to whom? Thanks.

My son was wondering the same thing two years ago. He decided to email the admissions office to let them know. He had been deferred ED and was very happy to be accepted RD. This is the only additional information that he provided to the school after being deferred. He is now a happy member of the class of 2013! Good luck!!

How is one to go about sending word? “Dear so-and-so, since the time I have submitted my application, I have received these awards, the content of which I hope will supplement my file.”
