i'm a rising senior, and i just got my results for the june SAT. i didn't really prepare (took a kaplan class, biggest waste of money in my life, learned NOTHING) and got a 2140. i'd be pretty happy with that score, but i'm a bit worried about the breakdown:

cr: 800
math: 600
writing: 740

as you can see, math is waaaaaay lower than the other 2 sections. so i'm looking for advice as to whether i should retake (maybe actually study this time, haha), or just be happy with what i have. i suppose colleges will see math is not my strong suit; for example, next year i'm taking AP everything except CP trig. but i'm worried that they might see me as lazy if i don't retake... please give me your thoughts on this!

also, to make this even more complicated, i'm not sure how i'd work the scheduling of a retake, because i have to take more SAT iis in october, and then i wouldn't be able to apply early decision/action anywhere... ugh, basically this is a really annoying mess and i probably should have planned better, but oh well! thanks for your help! :)

btw, if it makes a difference, i'm looking at colleges like NYU, american, barnard, mt holyoke, smith, george washington, and bryn mawr.

Try going to collegeboard. They have average SAT score breakdowns, so you can kinda tell what type of students they usually accept. And I guess it depends on what you’re planning to take?

My sister applied early action with only her SAT Reasoning, then send the SAT II scores a little after. So I think you can possibly take the reasoning in October and the subjects in november. :)

I’m right there with you. Our breakdowns are similar in nature (exceptional reading and writing, above average math but not near ivy level), and I’m a bit concerned about the dramatic difference too. I’m going to retake it for sure – you probably want to do the same.

I’ve only taken the SAT once (yikes) and I’m going into my senior year with no subject tests. What seems to be most logical for me is to retake the SAT in October and do the SAT IIs in November, but that’s cutting it really close. The school I’m looking at for ED doesn’t require the IIs, but obviously in the world of elite colleges “recommended” is a polite way of saying “all of these other highly qualified dudes will be doing it, and if you want a shot, you should too” – suffice to say it’s a bad spot to be in.

hi fdeb, it’s nice to know at least i’m not the only one in this position! i’ve got one SAT II, a 740 on US history, but i’m planning on taking lit and spanish and dropping whichever of the 3 is the lowest.
that’s basically the schedule i was thinking of- i feel kind of panicky leaving everything that last minute, but hopefully it should all work out. i hate how they say “recommended” too! i almost wish they just said “required” for the sake of clarity thanks for the advice, and i hope it works out for us!
