Should I retake the SAT?

So I'm a junior and got a 2220 (M: 760 CR: 700 W: 760) on my first official SAT last October. Even though I'm really happy with this score, I'm wondering if I should take it again?

The thing is, I started off with a 173 on my PSAT last year and prepped really hard to get that score. Also my best score on a practice SAT was 2170 so I'm not sure if I should retake it. (I have the hardest time with Reading and this was my best score) In addition, I don't think I really have the time to prep again for it though because of school work. I'll also be taking the ACT this May or so.

Interested in applying to Carnegie Mellon (School of Computer Science/ Tepper) and maybe some ivies.

Btw I'm Korean.

A 2220 is a really good score. Unless you think you can seriously bump it up next time, I wouldn’t recommend taking it again.

Yeah, I agree that you shouldn’t retake it unless you KNOW you can do better. Going down might cause some worries, and unless you can get a better scholarship with a higher score or something, I’d settle down with that score since its already really good.

:D thanks guys. Do you guys think the score’s enough for competitive schools such as CMU (SCS/Tepper), UPENN, and some Ivies even though I’m Korean? :P

Since you’re Asian, a 2200 won’t really help you, especially at the level of schools youre applying to. Certainly it won’t hurt you - it just won’t be a factor that will HELP, per se, in getting you accepted. So you better have some wicked grades and ec’s! Good luck!!!

It looks like you’re a bit below the 75th percentiles for Upenn, so that combined with some nice ECs and correlating grades should put you in competition. But I last read they only accept like ~12% or so of applicants, so one can never be sure.

Okay. I have pretty good grades/course rigor & my ECs I think are decent which includes a few clubs, local soccer, and running an online business since Freshman that’s made over 5 figures so far. I’m not sure how unique that is though  I saw a lot of people had their own “businesses” here on CC.

I’d suggest taking a couple practice tests and seeing how your score flucutates. If it goes up, by all means. If you aren’t willing to put the time into it, don’t bother. A 2220 is acceptable with good ECs. A company is going to look quite good on an application. I retook a 2320. Best of luck!

With a 760 in W, you should be able to get that CR up with some practice. Some schools value the CR and M scores more than the W, so not all 2220s are the same. Not sure it is worth a retake though. There is a lot more to an application than SAT scores. Best of luck!

I actually find the Writing section and Critical Reading section very very different. Writing is really easy for me since it’s just error finding. Reading I actually have to understand the passage + I’m a slow reader.

Okay I just heard that most “prestigious” schools require 1500+ on CR+M score for presidential merit scholarships. Is this true?

I’m on the same boat as you. I am studying hard over the break, so I can retake the test in either October or November. Good luck!

Well I’m still doubting about taking it :P. If I do take it, I will go all out on CR and M.
