Ok so this past January, I got a 800 M 640 R 760 W. I really want to get into a top university, like Duke, U of Michigan, UVA, maybe Cornell, Colgate, etc...

I know scores are not the only thing in the world, but I am registered for the test this coming Saturday and I have not been practicing. The reason for this is that I was quite happy with my 2200 and had a "don't care" additude, which I know isn't a good thing.

Now, I am sort of freaking out because 640 R is quite low... Reading is very hard for me and I was never too sure about the section in general.

Here come(s) my question(s)...
1. Should I just wing it for this Saturday?
2. If I do poorly, will colleges see this?
3. If I excel in reading and go down in the other two sections, should i send both scores?
4. Will it look bad if I only send one SAT score?
5. Is a 640 a big dump on my shot at top univs?

If you’re a senior, you’re going to have to take it since this is sort of your last chance. The 640 does stand out quite a bit, since it’s so much lower than the rest of the scores. Even though 2200 is good, the vast discrepancy is not, especially since colleges do care about CR. You are right that test scores aren’t everything, but I believe you should take it Saturday. In the mean time, looking through some vocab lists will help since there’s not much else you can do.

You should still take the SAT on Saturday, but I’m not sure if you will be able to increase your CR score since you haven’t studied. I found that practicing multiple reading passages, and just reading in general helped increase my CR score a lot (by 110 points). So, it’s certainly possible to increase your score. Even though you have not done any extra preparation for this SAT, it is highly unlikely that you will do worse than your first attempt, so I wouldn’t worry about that. Good luck!

Oh, and I can empathize with the “don’t care” attitude. I felt the same way after taking the SAT, so I just didn’t take the ACT. That probably wasn’t the best choice since I might have done better on the ACT.

You need to get that 640 CR up if you want to be more competitive for those schools. Many schools weigh the CR more than the W score . . . not all 2200 are the same, so to speak. Go ahead and take it again. You will do great!
