Should I swap my dorm room?

I'll be entering U of M in the fall as a junior transfer, and I've never lived away from home before, let alone in a dorm. Housing for transfer students isn't guaranteed and North Quad was my only good choice - it was North Quad, Baits, Northwood, or Oxford! - so I took it without a second thought.

However, I realized that I don't know much about North Quad, other than that it's new. I don't know anyone who's lived there and I know in general where the location is, but that's about it.

I've been checking out the room swaps at the UMich housing website, and there are a lot of people who want to swap rooms INTO North Quad and OUT OF places like South Quad.

Is North Quad a good dorm, or would I be wise to try and switch into a bigger/maybe more social dorm like South Quad that's right in the heart of Central? I know South Quad is mainly freshmen/sophomores and North Quad is all upper level, but still - is NQ a nice dorm with plenty of social opportunities and a good general dynamic? How's the food? I'm a Classics major so 90% of my classes are going to be in the Angell Hall complex - is NQ conveniently located for that?

Any other opinions on North Quad and/or any advice on swapping out to a place in SQ or Oxford or someplace like that would be MUCH appreciated.

Hey, iloveumich, I was going to post this on the other thread, but I know you said there that you wanted to live in Cambridge. I’ve long been interested in the North Quad and I’m wondering if maybe–though I’m definitely not promising anything–you’d want to swap with me.

Is the room you have now part of a suite or separate?

North Quad is the newest dorm and it’s super nice. Rooms are nice and it’s in a good area. Angell Hall is a 5 minute walk from NQ at most. It’s really difficult to get into NQ so make sure you’re absolutely certain you want to switch out, although I’m not sure why you ever would.

I would honestly stay in North Quad. The location is good, the food is good, the dorms are big. Everything is new and really, really nice. You’re extremely lucky to get in as a transfer- I’ll be a senior next year and couldn’t get a dorm there!

North quad is great! I had a friend who lived there, and the rooms are very nice. There are plenty of lounges for studying with people, and the location is really good for central campus. Stay where you are!
