I’m planning to pursue the pre-med track in college. Will experience with AP Lit prove useful when fulfilling prereqs? I heard that AP Lit is impractical for non-humanities majors. Is there any truth to this?
In my opinion only: everyone can benefit from expanded/honed writing and critical reading skills.
Whether or not useful college credits are granted depends on the scores you achieve and the college you attend. You should probably look up the policies for AP tests at your target schools - either on the school websites or via the college board site - to help you weigh the decision. If AP Lit will allow you to earn some required credits and open up space in your college schedule, it may be worth it. Be aware that some schools offer the same credits for AP Lit as AP Lang, so taking one if you’ve already had the other is not necessarily advantageous from this specific perspective.
Have you taken AP English Language?
Which other classes would you be taking at the same time?
I have taken AP English Language. I plan to take AP Biology and AP Statistics during my senior year.
It’s not that AP Lit is impractical for non-humanities majors. No class is “practical” except for shop and culinary arts, but that doesn’t mean they’re not useful. Note the distinction.
AP Lit is good if you love to read.
If you don’t, you’ll be miserable. If you do, you’ll love it.
Take it if you love reading great books.
You could take a post-AP Language class at your local college or take Honors English if you’re worried about course rigor - I’d definitely take one more AP or Dual Enrollment class beside AP Bio and AP Stats, but it doesn’t have to be AP Lit.
