I’m currently a junior and building my schedule for next year. This year I’m in AP Language and I have a B+, which isn’t a bad grade. I’m planning on applying for a dual degree program in college to get a BM in Music Performance and a BA as a backup (Eastman/U of Rochester, NEC/Tufts, etc). Next year I’m planning on taking AP French, AP Statistics, AP Music Theory, Honors Psych (we don’t have AP at my school), Honors Language, Myth, and Human Culture, and then band and choir. I’m worried that the fact that I plan on dropping AP English won’t look great to colleges, but I’m not sure it will really matter seeing as my ACT score was well in the range of the average of all the schools I’m considering and my GPA seems to be in line. I also have found a lot of success with music as an extracurricular, coming #1 in my county, #3 in my region and #4 in my state. Will I look like a lazy applicant? I’m especially concerned about Tufts.
AP Lit has made me hate writing/reading beyond words. Considering you’re taking a ton of other AP classes, you’ll be fine if you don’t take AP Lit. I really wouldn’t recommend that class - it’s incredibly stressful. You need to enjoy your high school years, not stress about all your classes and grades. Up to you though - that’s just my opinion!
I think your proposed schedule looks rigorous already. One thing that might help make your decision is looking into what AP exam scores in Language and Lit count towards in your potential schools. It could be that they both would satisfy the same general ed English requirement. If so, you may choose not to do AP Lit if you take the Language exam this spring and are satisfied with your score and what it will give you credit for.
