I was wondering if I should take AP Psychology as a sophomore in highschool. I’m already taking my first AP class this semester (AP World History) and it was a lot of work, but its rather managable. I’m interested in the psychology field and think it would be beneficial, since I want to go in the medical field. If anyone has taken it, please let me know if you liked it.
Here is my schedule next semester:
Math 2 Honors
AVID
Spanish 3-4
English 10 Honors
Should I take AP Psychology for second period instead of AVID? Please help. Thanks. (:
If you didn’t join avid your freshman year, then take AP Psychology. I’m a freshman and I asked a couple of my friends who are taking avid if I should join it my sophomore year, and they said I could if I wanted to but it would’ve been better if I took it Freshman year since I’ll be used to it (not to mention, most of the Avid students sophomore year most likely were in avid before).
But, if you did take avid your freshman year, you should take it if you want to. My school allows students to take avid 0 period or 7th period as well, and a lot of avid students choose to take avid in either those periods so that they can take other classes, but idk if you want to take extra classes xD
On the other hand, many ucs and colleges are looking for students who challenge themselves by taking the hardest classes, so AP Psychology can benefit you. I also heard that it’s the most interesting AP class too.
You seem like a great student, so I’d go for AP Psych. I’m pretty sure you’ll do fine in that class if you did good in AP World History. Just remember, take a class that won’t ruin your GPA and a class that you are interested in. Don’t take easy classes. And if you still can’t decide, talk to your counselor. Hope I helped (sorry if I didn’t)
I think it should depend on your previous semesters’ performance. If you have been an A student so far and think you will continue doing well, AP Psych would be a better fit. If you are a B student but know you can do better, AVID can be really beneficial, since it will teach you the skills you need to get your grades up to A’s.
I’m a sophomore taking AP Psych. Honestly, I enjoy it a lot. I had an interest in psychology before taking the class, so that definitely helped. The workload isn’t too unmanageable (for me at least) and it’s overall pretty interesting. I’d say go for it!
I’m a sophomore self-studying AP Psych, and I find the material to be very easy to understand, though I’ve always had somewhat of an interest in psychology myself. I can’t attest to an in-person class or exam, but I’m doing a one semester psych course through my local CC and supplementing with materials from my high school’s AP Psych class (scheduling conflict). If it interests you, I’d say go for it! From the experiences of my friends and the curriculum in the high school class, it certainly seems manageable. Even if you don’t want to go into psychology, having a basic understanding of it can be helpful in a variety of fields.
The choice is up to you, but AVID is useful senior year (especially if you are first gen/low-income) when you have a free period to do college apps and automatically qualify for scholarships (Dell scholars). Talk to the Avid kids at your school because the programs can vary. Are you allowed to join avid as a senior?
@ezlbio thanks! i’m going to talk to my consuler tomorrow. If you don’t mind answering, what did you end up in the class? also any other advice about studying?
I took it as an elective in my junior year. My teacher wasn’t exactly the fairest grader. I ended up with around an A- in the class. I also got a 4 on the AP exam. Get the Barron’s flashcards!!! The class is all vocabulary and people. They were the majority of my preparation.
I think you should do it. Im a junior now and last year i took AP World just like you and I passed the exam with a high 3. AP World was pretty hard but my friends all took AP Psych and passed with a 5, so that tells you how much easier it is.
