I am currently a sophomore taking English Honor as an English class. I have a B- in the class. I am not an English native speaker or skilled at writing either but I am hardworking and looking forward to take APEng to further improve my English and writing ( I am thinking about taking AP LIt senior year as well). Do you think I should take APEng next year (at my high school you can only choose between regular English and APeng)? Will it look bad if I don’t do APEng since I took English Honor?
Also, next year I will be taking AP Chinese(this will be easy for me because I am a native speaker), AP Bio, AP Computer Science Principle (I know a bit about computer science already), Regular US History, Ceramics, Pre-cal.
Why not ask your teacher and counselor at school? I think you are running a risk by taking AP English. A B- implies that English is tough for you as it is. If you try it, be sure to get extra help at the first signs of struggling.
I agree that you should talk to your current teacher and get his or her recommendation for your placement next year. It’s great that you want the challenge but I agree that the B- suggests that you may not have the underlying skills to be a great candidate.
Also remember that if you struggle, this will take a disproportionate amount of your time and you may find that you don’t have the time to dedicate to your other classes, even if they play to your strengths. It’s all about balance.
I would recommend that whatever you choose, you try to read as much as you can, particularly over the summer when you have more time and can read what you like. It’ll help your English skills in a million ways. And it might even be fun! If you want recommendations, start a thread…
My son is currently taking AP English as a HS Jr. If your writing skills are lacking, you will not do well in that class. Reading comprehension is also very important.
