Should I take honors classes at my CC?

I am hoping to transfer to USC for Electrical Engineering. They only ask for 30 units, up to Calculus 2, their writing requirements and two science lab courses.

I currently have 16 units of GEs in with a 4.0 + 20 or something worth of AP credits. I am starting my first semester this fall. I am thinking about registering for Physics, Calc 2 honors, English, and intro to Java.

Do you think it will make much of a difference if I take honors English course or even an honors math course or not? I feel that keeping a high GPA would mean more than taking challenging courses that could hurt my GPA.

At least for English, since its not part of my major, and as I already passed AP lit with a 4 and AP lang with a 3, I don't think they'll care much about normal English. This coursework ends up being 16 units too, so I don't want to make it too challenging on time.

Any ideas?

Usually the honors courses you’re talking about just mean you get to do papers/presentations on outside research/reading and the curriculum of the course is practically (if not exactly) the same.

If you think you can get A’s with the extra workload, go for it. However, you are correct that an A in calc II non-honors > B in calc II honors. Even if you do get the A’s, it’s more effort without much ROI for admissions. Having A’s in honors classes can’t hurt though :-)
