I was accepted to UCSD with a Pre-Major status so I want to get ahead (and hopefully graduate on time) by taking MATH 2D (during session 1) and 3D (during session 2) at UCI.

Is this a good idea? Are classes much more intense during the Summer?

Major courses/Lower Div/Upper Div will always be harder during the summer, that’s just how compressed terms work, they’re teaching you things in half the time (or less). If you feel that you are behind in work, I say go for it. If you’re ahead, maybe take 1 class. I’m just saying this because I don’t want you to suddenly be overwhelmed and then end up dropping a class or anything

Thanks for the input. The classes would be taken during separate times. Math 2D ends when Math 3D begins.

Does anyone know if the classes are much more difficult than they are at a CC? I was looking at the syllabus for the course equivalent at my CC and they actually cover LESS material at the UC. (I’m assuming they add more material at my CC so it transfers to more places?)

Most courses are easier in the summer, including Calculus. This is especially true at UCI. (I go to UCI right now).

I don’t know how they compare to community college though.

@HeatZz

Do you know if the classes get filled up quick? When is the latest I should enroll in the class?

Also do you guys recommend seeing a counselor before I take these classes?

I looked at this:

[UCSD Mathematics: Transfer Equivalencies](http://www.math.ucsd.edu/programs/undergraduate-program/transfer-equivalencies/)

and they are the ones I would need to take for UCSD.

What CC do you go to Pandahx?

I was thinking of doing this too. Haven’t looked into when the classes start or anything though.

You can sign up for UCI summer courses now: https://summer.uci.edu/courses/

Check how many people are enrolled already [url=Schedule of Classes]Schedule of Classes/url

@HeatZz

thanks for that, man!

Summer classes do go at a faster pace, but remember that in your situation you’ll only have one class to focus on. That makes the course work a lot more manageable. As long as you are just taking one class at a time, summer session shouldn’t be very difficult.

I’m pretty sure you need a minimum of 6 units in the Summer to qualify for financial aid. Talk to the transfer assistant group at UCI. I met some of them. They talked about this easy 2 units class that you can take on top of the class you need to take so you would qualify for financial aid.

The summer class is going to be very pricey for you since you are NOT a UCI student. You won’t have access to their financial aid. Unless you have the cash, I would not recommend it. Check to see if theres space even available though. I took a summer class last year at UCI…an upper div. marketing course and it cost me nearly $2k in fees/books/material costs.

@speakbraille

Yeah, the total cost for me is around 2.3k total (for both classes). I would have to spend all the money I have saved up. I hope it is worth it.

Why not just take classes next summer at the UC you’re going to?

There’s no guarantee that the units will transfer…I’d double check with UCSD first. And why UCI and not UCSD?

@oceanpartier

Yeah I just emailed UCSD. Thanks for the heads up. I think according to this:

[UCSD Mathematics: Transfer Equivalencies](http://www.math.ucsd.edu/programs/undergraduate-program/transfer-equivalencies/)

I should be fine.

And I’m only taking the course at UCI because I live close enough to UCI to commute, I wouldn’t be able to afford living at UCSD over the Summer.

Now I’m just waiting for UCSD to get back to me before I pull the trigger and enroll in the courses.

Actually guys, they just emailed me back (surprisingly quick!) and said that taking the courses at UCI would be fine! Looks like I will be enrolled in the courses.

Thanks for the input everyone!
