Should I take the AP Lit test?

I took AP Lang last year and got a 4 on the AP test. On the U of M website I saw that AP Lit satisfies the freshman writing requirement and the literature core requirement. Lang only satisfies the freshman writing requirement. I'm in AP Lit right now and I was planning to not take the AP test since I got a good score on Lang. But now that I'm looking at the site and seeing that Lit gives you credit for more.... I should take it, right? If I get a good score, does that mean I won't have to take any English classes (I'm going to be in CLA)?

jfnutffr - My son took both Lang and Lit and he received 7 credits. 3credits for the Lit req and 4 credits to fulfill a writing requirement. Oddly, both are listed under Lit. So I don’t know if this is because he took both, he got a 4 and 5 on tests, or what…either way, getting 7 credits and fulfilling 2 requirements before you even begin sounds def worth taking the test.

As for not having to take any English courses, I guess that will depend on your major. My son received credit for his Calc and some science, but because he is in engineering they did not count as fulfilling any courses.

He received 6 credits for APUSH US history. His biggest regret was not taking the time to do the on campus 2 hour foreign language test which I think was offered in early summer. Most of his friends who had 4 years in HS were able to get 8 credits for this.

Why not take the test if you’ve taken the class…unless your teacher has not prepared you.

The AP EngLit will give you 3 credits that satisfy the 3 credit lit requirement in the ‘diversified core.’ It also would give you freshman composition-WRIT1301, but you have that from AP EngLang already. It would have been enough to take just the AP EngLit exam if you knew you were going to UMN, but nobody knows these things so far in advance. You only need a 3 on the test to get the gen ed credit, so definitely take it. You need 4 writing intensive courses, but you will have flexibility to take whatever classes you want(click on ‘Writing Intensive’ to see what courses qualify- one needs to be in your major, 2 of them should be upper division, like it says on the page), won’t need any English. I’m not clear as to whether the Lit Core credit you get for the AP EngLit exam might also give credit for one of the writing intensive courses. I was looking into this earlier in the year when UMN was on D’s college list, but never called anyone to check that. The thing is that some of the comments on the AP credit page specify that certain course credit does NOT satisfy writing intensive. It doesn’t say that by AP EngLit, so there is a chance. You should call them. Bottom of the page it says to call admissions for more info.

Take it for sure! I took and passed both the AP Lit and Lang tests, and that fulfilled the freshman writing requirement and the literature liberal education requirement.

Very nice to not have to do those. And if you passed Lang with a 4, I’m sure you can pass Lit.

Yes, you won’t have to do any English classes if you pass both, although you do still need “writing intensive” courses. Those often end up being in your major anyways though.

Yes, absolutely take the exam!

Take the exam!

WRIT1301 is such a pain at the U of M.

Or, if there is a CIS option at your high school, take that.
It would be an easy A.
