Should I take the Chem Subject Test?

I'm going to be a senior next year taking AP Chemistry. I took the Chem Subject test back in 10th grade with regular Chemistry and did less than stellar (560) it was definitely a mistake taking it then. Should I do some studying over the summer along with a half year of AP Chem. and take the Subject Test again in December as a senior and get around a 650+? Would it be worth it?

if you're doing Ap chem, then sat chem shouldn't be too hard. 650 shouldn't be a problem if you can get 4/5 on ap.

I took it this January, and I was amazed at how easy it was after half a year of AP Chemistry and AP Physics. My friend who took the Physics SAT II (Also in my AP Physics leading the class) said it was really hard, and he got a 690 on it.

Considering my trend at being not so good at the SAT I (730M, 680CR the 2nd time), you can conclude that it won't take a genius to do well on this test. I ended up with a 750.

The math was really simple, and the rest of the questions weren't anything an AP Chem student wouldn't know offhand. However, time is a problem (just like it is on all tests for me :( ). The review books definitely go way over the top. I panicked before the test because I had studied a whole 2 and a half hours for it, and I wished I had signed up for the physics minutes before taking it. I was happy I took the Chemistry after seeing how easy the exam was and how little work it required. If I were you, I'd take it in December of your senior year.

Ishouldstudy,

What books did you use for SAT2 Chem?

Thanks,

would Dec be the only possible date to get a really good score (700+) if taking an AP senior yr (chem i guess)?

like what would be the strategy, should i try to look at the 2nd semester stuff and let the class teach me the 1st semester stuff?

Inguye02, I borrowed the Kaplan SAT Chem 2004-2005 from my chem teacher and it definitely overprepared me. I've also heard on these forums that the Kaplan is junk for the Chem exam, but I haven't used a book other than that one, so I wouldn't know. I was very nervous about failing the exam after skimming the material in the Kaplan book for 2 and a half hours before the exam.

If you're a senior during AP Chem, I recommend taking the SAT II soon after your AP Chem midterm exam if your teacher gives one. There will be SOME stuff that you haven't covered yet on the exam, but barely any at all. Skim a review book for the rest. Ideally, you should take it after you take AP Chem, but that was impossible for me because it was my senior year (I ended up taking them after my colleges' deadlines were in January :S ). So, if you're a Junior, take it right after the AP Chem test. If you're a senior, I'd take it right after a midterm, so you're all reviewed up. Otherwise, I'd take it as late as possible into the AP Chem semester. If you don't have a good grip on what's going on in AP Chem and don't pay attention to the little details, start paying attention! They definitely pay off later, and will help other stuff in other chapters and courses make sense. I took NY State Regents Chemistry 2 years before I took AP Chem, and it did a good job of preparing me for the course. I don't recommend taking the SAT II after Regents Chem, though.

what about after Honors Chem ishouldstudy?

I doubt it. I was in Honors Regents Chem, and I wouldn't feel prepared after that course. You'll need to learn a lot in a review book if you want to take it after Honors Chem.

did your honors regents chem class course description say that the class would prepare you for the SATII Chemistry, or did it just say for the regents?

It was Honors Regents Chem, only to prepare for the Regents.
