Should I take the new SAT? What about SAT IIs?

Hey guys- first I gotta say great forum. Immensely grateful for such an amazing resource.

1) I'm a junior in high school, and last October I found out that I got a 1600 on the SAT. I am concerned about my prospects for the new SAT however. What kind of score will I need to prove that my 1600 wasn't just extremely good luck? (even though that's mostly true) Do I need a perfect score again?

Everyone is telling me I shouldn't take the new SAT, even though I am pretty sure the schools I really want to attend - Cornell, Dartmouth, maybe Duke - want to see it. Would anyone recommend me curtailing the new SAT and just taking the Writing SAT II? Or is this a bad idea if I'm aiming for schools ranked in the Top 20/30 in the country?

2) Also, a side question: how many SAT II's should I take? What kind of score ranges would be acceptable for attendance in Top 20/30 schools?

3) And lastly... when should I get all these tests in if I want to do early action? I'm guessing before October? Can I take two tests in one month? Are there any in the summer?

As you can see, I'm hella confused on where to go from here, test-taking wise. Thank you guys so much for sharing any wisdom you may have- it comes highly appreciated!

If you are a junior this year you are in class of 2006. MOST but not quite all schools have already announced what their policies are for applicants applying from class of 2006. The College Board Web site will link to details from a broad array of colleges. Do what the colleges you desire most desire that you do: that's what I'd advise.

the CB website is not necessarily up-to-date. You definitely should check out each web site of the schools you are considering. The Writing SATII was discontinued after Jan, so it is no longer offered. Most schools that are accepting the new SAT, will only require two SATII's, but I think some schools are still transitioning, i.e., I've read elsewhere on cc that Penn was considering requiring three SATIIs plus the new SAT.

For scores on any of the tests, you always would prefer somethign that starts with a '7' for the highly selective schools.

June is last test day until next Oct -- no summer. I think some schools will accept the Nov test if you rush scores, but you better check their websites.

good luck
