Before I start, I know appeals rarely go through. I think I have a strong chance though due to my circumstances.

So I live in Texas, and I got mostly rejected from UT for the CAP program, meaning I'd have to go to a UT system school for one year and then transfer to UT. I got auto acceptance to A&M, but the real kicker is that I got admission to UIUC. I'd LOVE to go there, but it costs a ton and my dad has to pay for it by himself as decided in my parents' divorce, so he's kinda screwed if he has to pay around $40,000 a year, not to mention my mother, who has depression, would rarely be able to see me and that wouldn't be very good for her mental health.

So I appealed to UT, because I had a rough high school experience, with my parents divorcing, undiagnosed ADD, depression and anxiety to the point that I had and still have to take medication for, and many other various circumstances that made my GPA a lot lower than it should have been. I appealed about a month ago, and I'm still waiting on a response, so I called UT admissions and they admitted the appeals response would most likely come only AFTER May 1st, the deadline for accepting admission. So should I wait for the appeal to potentially help my family, or go to my dream school and abandon them? I just don't know. Anyone know anything about appeals?

Your plan makes no sense whatsoever. There is no logic in waiting on an appeal the most likely will go against you. Take your spot at A&M and move on.

If you DO get accepted into UT (and I think that’s a large stretch) you can call A&M and decline. In my mind this is similar to coming off a wait list. You may not get your down payment back but otherwise there shouldn’t be a problem.

UIUC is just too much money. Take A&M or go to the branch campus and transfer. Await the UT appeal, if it comes through you can withdraw your acceptance elsewhere and only lose your deposit, which is worth it if that is your best option.

Just so it is clear: you must acept some college by May 1 to assure going to any college. If you do not accept at A&M or UIUC on or before May 1, you will no longer be considered an accepted student on May 2 and thus it is the same as if you positively rejecterd admission to those colleges. It sounds like UIUC is unaffordable. To make that even more clear be aware that UIUC is not generous on fincancial aid and likely will not even offer enough with loans to meet the costs and unless your grades and test scores are stellar, you should not expect any scholarships; and even if your grades and test scores are stellar, you should not expect mucvh of a scholarship. In other words, you should likely accept at A&M and wait for a decision from UT to see if you can switch; you are allowed to accept at one while waiting for another on the wait list; your penalty if you switch is usually loss of any deposit made to the first college.
