I have read mixed reviews on the parents forum as to whether or not to bring a computer printer. Some parents commented that their student never used them and others used them all the time.....so opinions of U Michigan students are greatly appreciated..thks

there’s computer labs in dorms, so u dont need a printer. A friend brought a printer 1st semester, but he brought it back home after that. none of my friends have printers in their room, and i think its unnecessary.

Depends on courses, most don’t need them. However, McSon did NOT take a printer, but then took a printer second semester, as he was taking a illustration-style course where it was more convenient to scan outlines in his room, photoshop, then print. He found it to be more convenient in that case.

My Art School daughter got a printer in the required computer bundle that she bought. It came home last week having never been used.

I got a nice printer for my D that she never used. She says it’s much easier the ones on campus.

As people in this thread have mentioned, there are plenty of printers around campus. For pretty much all of them, you can upload your documents online, choose a printer, and go pick up your documents. This feature certainly adds to the convenience.

The upside of having a printer in your room is that you don’t need to leave your room to pick up your printing, which can be nice if you’re up late working on a project due in the morning. This mostly comes in handy if you live off campus. However, and for the most part, owning a printer is unnecessary.

It’s not a huge hassle going to the closest campus printer to print, but if you already have a printer I definitely suggest bringing it. It’s just much more convenient, even if you use it fewer than 10 times a semester.

Not sure about Engin, but I believe LSA gives you 400 free pages per semester.

I use my printer daily. At 2am, yes, it is a pain in the butt to go from the 4th floor to the basement and across the building to get to the computer lab. In my dorm this past year I had to allow at least a half hour to go downstairs and print something and come back up because it took 20 minutes just to go down to the lab and come immediately back up. It’s also a pain in the ass when you realize you’ve forgotten to print something two minutes before you have to leave for class and don’t have time to run downstairs, or when you just need to print directions really quick before you leave to go somewhere.

I can see why some people wouldn’t need one, my roommate didn’t have one-- though it drove her nuts because our basement was creepy. But I am one person that definitely used my printer all the time.

One part of that though was that I was not just printing papers, I was also printing reading assignments rather than reading them straight on the computer from ctools-- some students tolerate reading 60 pages a day on a computer screen really well and have no need to print them out, other students can’t do that. That’s a personal preference. I can see students who read straight from ctools being much less dependent on a printer than I was.

And in the interest of full disclosure, we bought a printer when I moved in and next year we will be buying a laser jet to replace the inkjet so that I can do even more printing.

I agree with Emaheevul07. It’s nice to have the option, even if you don’t use it all the time. Whenever I had to print off 40-page readings for a class, I would take the time to go down to the Rescomp in my dorm and use up my Printing Pages. But a lot of times, I would wake up for class and realize I had forgotten to print off a homework assignment and was thankful I could do it while putting my shoes on.

if you’re in engineering, don’t bring one. you get 400 pages of printing on central campus computers and then like, 2000something on CAEN printers. the only problem is that CAEN printers are only on north campus, but if you have a class twice a week up there, it’s not that hard to go to one after class and print out everything you need for the week.
