I'm feeling nervous about it being so late and we haven't paid anything to Chapman yet. S has an ROTC scholarship, so his tuition and fees will be covered, but we need to pay for room, board, and some of the miscellaneous fees like parking. I know they had that problem with not getting bills out, but the amount we owe is online in webadvisor. In our case, the tuition and fees haven't been take out yet, so we aren't for sure what we'll owe. It'll be about $6,000 (1 semester room & board), so I'm thinking of just paying that amount. What are you guys doing?

I was also getting nervous. I finally found a letter on WebAdvisor through the STAR account that had all the charges, loans, scholarships layed out. I spoke with a person from the business office on Thursday and she said to pay the amount that is minus the loans, scholarships, etc. They can't implement those amounts until the student attends the first day of class. I sent in my epayment and I just got a notice back that the account I used is not set up for this kind of transaction. So I'll have to do some switching this weekend. I think they know that we're newbies and things do take longer. The person on the phone was very nice and didn't say anything about being late, etc. The epayment letter laying everything out was only from this Monday. Good luck!

Once my son registered for his classes, it generated a bill on his STAR account....but it was one lump sum so I called the business office to ask for help in breaking it down...we came up with an amount I should pay (assuming he was going to get into his 1st or 2nd choice dorm which he did) minus his pending scholarship....my son had made me a user on his account so I did send the payment using epay and then on 7/30 was sent a paper copy (it is also online too) of his STAR account that shows all of his various fees, tuition, meals, residence hall, etc that were charged, my online payment and the balance due...which is the scholarship amount....but then there was a line that said account balance less pending financial aid which was $0.00. So, I too am assuming once school starts that the financial aid part will be awarded and all will be well....my son will not have a car so he needs to fill out a form to get the parking fee back and if you don't want their Sickness Plan 1 you need to show proof of insurance and apply to get that refunded....the finance person told me that refunds can actually be refunded to the student as a check or be credited to their STAR their account....this all can be done during orientation I guess.....the woman I talked to in the business office was extremely patient with all my questions....

Okay, I found that sheet on the STAR account that lists everything. Unfortunately, it doesn't make any sense to me! For example, S will be staying in a triple in Henley. For one semester, that should be $5,709. On the STAR form it breaks the meal plan out separately and says it is $1,788. By my calculations, that should leave $3,921, but there is nothing on there of that amount. There is something called "HN 428" which I thought might be housing, but it is $4,678.

There are some credits on there, too, and I don't know what they are. S received the Chancellor's scholarship, so it could be that (although the amount doesn't look quite right on that, either). He won't actually be using the Chancellor's scholarship because it's for 50% tuition, and the ROTC scholarship will pay 100% tuition & fees, so that's probably going to be a headache for the business office when the scholarship award arrives.

One credit that is not listed is the $600 we sent in for housing whenever that was. Guess I'd better find the check # for that.

Anyway, it's kind of annoying that there isn't a clear statement online. I'll try calling them on Monday.

I learned that they bill you for a double room in the beginning even if you are tripled....then if the triple holds and no one leaves school or goes to another room, etc. you will be credited the difference in the double versus triple rate....also, the $600 is a deposit that just stays out there for the whole year to cover any potential damage to the room....it does not come off your current bill...my son's bill included a fee for a physical activity he is doing and a lab fee for FTV class he is taking along with all the other fees that everyone gets charged....student activities fee, orientation fee, health services fee, etc.

At first, we waived Chapman's health insurance coverage, but then learned the geographic limitations of our family health insurance plan. Our plan really only covered local doctors from Western NY. So we caved and asked for the university's plan back. Before asking to waive the Chapman health plan, perhaps check very closely with how your local or family plan will cover him in California, far from home.

Timely,

You might be surprised. The Chancellor's might help cover housing. Each college does it differently. When my older son got a merit award at his college and the NROTC, the merit award went towards his housing and meal plan.

It might help to call. Also, since it takes awhile for the ROTC awards to show up, you might want to call before you send in a payment. It took until mid August last year for the ROTC funds to be applied for older son's school, and one person told me to fill out deferral forms...but then called the coordinator for ROTC and he told me to wait, it will just make things more complicated.

Although every school does it differently, it is easier to wait and pay then ask for a refund which could complicate things, considerably!

I did call the business office and son's billing rep actually broke it down to the penny of what will be owed after financial aid and scholarships. That helped considerably when I was figuring out what needed to be paid for and when. I highly urge you to contact the school and spell out what's going on - and they will advise you accordingly.

Good luck!
