Just saw an article (yet another bizarre school rankings list that randomly ranks Grad schools among BA, BFA and conservatory programs) with a couple tidbits that are relevant to this thread.

It doesn’t mention what % had SAG or Equity cards or agents or managers when they start college, which I know can be significant number in some programs.

I also find it very odd when rankings like this mix the undergrad and grad programs in the same list. If there are going to be so called rankings, at least compare apples to apples.

I completely agree - that’s why I didn’t post that aspect of the article anywhere. I have no idea why people create such odd lists that have no relevance to anyone. :)

If showcases are important to you, make sure you find out each school’s policies on getting into one. At many programs, you are not guaranteed a showcase spot–you must audition, and people are most definitely not chosen.

There are pros and cons of auditioned showcases. On one hand, like all auditions, they the can be subject to a school’s internal politics and/or the auditor’s subjective opinions, but they also can theoretically ensure that the school doesn’t gain a reputation for wasting attendee’s time and risk having agents stop coming in future years.

Our D and connection’s attend a school which hosts both an auditioned NYC showcase and a non-auditioned Chicago showcase. Given that many (if not most) of Northwestern’s students neither plan to pursue performing careers (many are aspiring directors, writers, agents, stage managers, producers, etc.) nor want to move to NY (many build successful careers in LA and Chicago), I think that it’s a great solution for them. But is it certainly true that some kids who hope for the NY Showcase may not get to participate.

In case it’s useful, I tried to harvest lists of which schools had showcases in which cities in 2014 for future reference, and added a note if it’s an auditioned showcase per discussion above. Please feel free to add to the list if you know more.

Columbia College Chicago is different. I don’t know if they have a showcase or not. I was taking about Chicago College of Performing Arts/Roosevelt, and I believe all seniors participate.

MomCares - where do you get you statistics from? You said the following with such authority, I’m wondering from where you got this information.

“Given that many (if not most) of Northwestern’s students neither plan to pursue performing careers (many are aspiring directors, writers, agents, stage managers, producers, etc.) nor want to move to NY (many build successful careers in LA and Chicago), I think that it’s a great solution for them.
Really? I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing, just wondering where you’ve seen this. I’m pretty sure the administration would take some exception to that thought, unless you’ve spoken to the Dean or someone who would know over the course of say five or ten years what the numbers are. I do believe that there are some kids who hope for the NY Showcase and are not chosen, but I don’t know the numbers for that.

@Jkellynh17 - Ooops! Sorry about the CCPA screwup… I also initially typed Oklahoma Northern for ONU… must have needed coffee. I was wondering if Columbia had a showcase as I was typing and that must have gone to my fingers.

@amtc - which statistics? Is it your impression that the majority of NU students graduate intending to be performers in NYC? If so, that’s quite different than my impression. Many kids we know there did not enter or leave with the intention of being performers, and many performers we know intend to build careers in places other than NYC. Even among the MTs, most of whom do plan to perform, there are many who choose not to move to NYC. Maybe I’m wrong, or maybe this was different in your D’s class? I hope others from NU offer their perspective as well.

At NU, with regards to those pursuing MT performance…could you examine how many seniors are in the MT Certificate program and how many slots are given in the NYC showcase for MT performers?
