Does it always have to be about selectivity? How about the fact that NO ONE else offers this kind of an experience to high school students…I hope everyone that attended enjoyed it and would love to hear your comments about the experience.

To the participants of this program, how did it go? We would love details on your time there! Thanks!

Actually about 500 people applied and roughly 60 made it in.

Wrong - 60 per session made it in. The director said acceptance quadrupled this year to 25%

It was actually really fun. I highly recommend it, and it seems to be considered very prestigious, considering the drastic increase in advertising.

Let me be more clear… There were 2 sessions each with two divisions (Morning, Afternoon). Each DIVISION had ~30 people.

Would you recommend it for those of us who got accepted this year?

Hi—don’t know if this reply is too late for you, but my two cents (I went last year):

It was overpriced for what you get. I missed out on some of the morning lectures b/c I was working, but a lot of people said I wasn’t actually missing much (nothing beyond what you’d get in an AP bio course); the lectures I did go to seemed okay but didn’t introduce that much information, except for a couple of special ones taught by dedicated professors (who were very articulate and informative!) The lab sections were great fun, although I can’t say they’ll be highly useful in your future except as a metric to gauge whether you like stitching things up (I did).

However, it was highly disorganized; halfway through the session, we were all told that lab that day was cancelled because we’d never completed an online safety course required by Stanford. (It wasn’t a very helpful safety course, but still…) Because Dr. Chang is a practicing surgeon and often quite busy, the course was organized by high school/college students who had taken it before. We never did go over lab safety—I had to teach my partner how to take off her gloves without touching the outside—despite working with scalpels, etc. and once handling a human heart.

Going on the site now, I see that the cost is twice as much as it was last year. Even with aid, unless it is significant, I would consider that much too high. Your mileage may vary, however.
