Signing Up for Dorms

I got accepted into the University of Maryland Scholars Program yesterday. Although I was really excited, UMD isn't my first choice, and I am still waiting for a few more decisions before I click that "Yes, I'm attending UMD!" button.

I've heard that dorm space is limited, and if you want the living space you prefer, you should register for a dorm early regardless of your decision of attending. From what I've heard, registering for a dorm doesn't require you to accept or deny your acceptance or pay for the dorm fee, but some of the stuff they say on the terms and conditions say otherwise.

Has anyone else done this before or know any information on this matter?

The way I interpreted the agreement was that if you notify them on or before July 1st that you don’t plan to attend, then you can be released from the housing agreement with no added fees… Is this correct??

YES. Sign up for housing NOW. Even if you wait until the very last day to say “YES, I’m going to be a TERP”, they assign housing in the order that the housing requests are received. Don’t need to pay anything up front for this, and just remember to tell housing (even if you also tell Admissions) if you change your mind and are not going to come to UMD.
