Is there any way to request a single (no roommates) dorm room for privacy and flexibility as a preference if you are admitted? Also, if you're on a floor with lots of people and generally socialize and hang out with others, is it considered awkward to be by yourself in a room? Thanks.

Only with a medical need. Sometimes frosh get them randomly. Not very many singles in frosh housing.

Would extreme insomnia qualify as a “medical need”?

I don’t have any medical need or special condition…but is the type of housing purely random all 4 years?

^No, not purely random. It’s the most random freshman year. After that there’s a system called the draw that tries to ensure some degree of control and equity in the housing lottery. And outside of the draw, you can preassign or become a staff member at a house/dorm of your choosing, although this can be pretty competitive for certain houses/dorms. Preassigning (I think) will most likely not get you a single. Oh plus there’s the Greek system, although I can’t see someone pulling off a single their first year at the frat/sorority.

To guarantee a single, you’ll need to have a medical need, or be on certain staff positions, or draw into a “premium room”. After freshman year, it is very doable to get a single each year, especially if you staff for one year.
