So the application date to transfer for the fall semester is just around the corner for SJSU, and I'm a bit worried. I've been hearing horror stories of people being denied with competent gpa's. I'm planning to double major in psychology and communication but my gpa does not meet the threshold requirements for either of them . They are both around the 3.3 mark but I only have a 3.07. Is all hope lost?

Side note:
I do have a few speech certificates and an AA in human development studies. I'll be getting another AA after the semester. I live 10 miles away. Will this help me at all??

The thresholds change each year as the applicant pool is different each year (the CSUs take students into the major by GPA and locality until all spots are filled). You can hope that your major is less competitive this year–I have seen swings of .3 for a given major from year to year.

No, the certificates and the AA will do nothing to help.

If you are a local transfer (based on where you got the majority of your CCC credits), that will help immensely because the CSU will select from your category (local) first.

Look into double majors–SJSU in particular has not allowed “super seniors”–if you have too many credits and have to stay an extra semester or two to finish up a second major you will be academically monitored and marched stepped quickly through the major that you can finish up first/the quickest. Check that A) they still allow double majors B) at what number of units will you be considered a super senior and be academically harassed and forced to finish ONE major, the major you are closest to finishing.

So your 3.07 meets both of those, plus as long as the majority of your CCC credits were earned at a CC in Santa Clara or Santa Cruz counties, then you do receive the locality/service area priority and you should be fine, depending on how many tenths each GPA threshold changes for Fall 2013.
