Can I skip Math 1A and Math 1B and take Math 53 in my first semester even if I did not get credit for 1A and 1B. Does Berkeley allow this???

The scheduling system won’t check prerequisites.

If your major lists 1A and/or 1B as a major requirement, check with the department if it is acceptable to skip it without having credit for it if you complete 53.

Whether or not it is a good idea depends on your actual knowledge of the subject matter. Check the [course outlines](Lower Division Course Outlines | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley) and [old final exams](Exams | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley).

berkeley allows it, yes.

try not to get too slaughtered in 53 though.

Should I go ahead and skip Math 1A and 1B and take Math 53 even though I haven’t got the credit for 1A and 1B???

I heard that to take Math 54, a great knowledge of 1B is required???

What do you guys recommend???

By the way, I’m an EECS major…

why are you avoiding 1a/1b?

there’s a reason these are prerequisites.

+it doesn’t matter if the material is easy or hard, you’ll be competing on a curve against students who have a year of calculus under their belt. this puts you at a disadvantage out of the gate since you’ll be playing a lot of catch up. a curve can be painful when you’re on the wrong end of it, so idk why you’re deliberately putting yourself at a disadvantage. there’s a reason why the average eecs gpa is 2.7

it is impossible to do well in 53 without first mastering 1a/1b.
54 is fair game for anyone who thinks they are “okay” at math. if you’re not familiar with power series or ODE’s, you may be caught with your pants down in the middle of the semester.

again, why would you skip 1a/1b?

Assuming that you have actually learned calculus but not gotten AP/IB/A-level/college credit for it…

Try reading the various advising resources available to you and checking your knowledge of 1A and 1B stuff on the old final exams.
