Well see the thing is once you go off to college no one actually falls alseep before midnight, so you automatically get on the same schedule too. And then if you're in a really tough major sometimes you can go late into the night working on the assignments... I don't think it's something anyone really means to do, just it sorta happens.

You will learn that catnaps are your best friend !!!

...especially in between classes ... especially if a class and your dorm room are far apart...

You'll catch a 15-minute to 2-hour nap in the library or student union, or if you're lucky to be at college in (sometimes) sunny California, a park bench or under a tree on campus.

You'll take sleep wherever and whenever you can get it.

Depending on your living situation (# of roommates / suite mates, a suite or a traditional dorm, in-room and in-dorm party situation), you might sleep 4-7 hours a night, but in 1-3 hour segments depending on the noise level and foot traffic in your room, suite or dorm floor.

Back in the day, when I was at college in Detroit, my dorm mates liked to play hockey in the hallway and football in the snow at 2 a.m.

my sleeping patterns have totally, completely changed at school.... to the point where i'm sometimes not even tired at, say, 2 am. it's ridiculous... but it happens, naturally. i feel like i've become nocturnal.

and yes - definitely try to take later classes, if possible. last semester i always had a class at 9 or 10 am... now, never before noon. it's wonderful!

A lot of times if I feel myself getting sleepy while reading, I find that a quick 20 minute nap will do the trick...

Also as far as haivng strange sleep patterns, did anybody else have a problem over Winter Break with that? I found myself with nothing at all to do, and yet not even being the slightest bit tired.

Yep. I stayed up till ~330 for the first weeks not because of jetlag (330 is my normal bedtime here) but instead because i was so used to going to bed at that time.

Yeah I used to have really bad sleeping habits last year. I would usually wake up at 11:30 before my class at noon and go to bed around 4 or 5 am typically. It was quite ridiculous. I would even oversleep for the noon class sometimes. Pretty pathetic, lol.

aahh yes, i had so much trouble over winter break!!! i would fall asleep at like 3:30, 4 o clock, wake up at noon... or later...

and i also wake up at 11:30 for my noon class! i always hope to wake up early and be productive, but so far no luck. i kind of wish my classes were a bit earlier, to force me to get more done...

i feel like everyone around me is nocturnal too!

When I was an undergraduate in electrical engineering at UIUC, I usually got at least 7 hours of sleep per night. I graduated with my BSEE with a GPA of 4.13 (3.13 on the 4-point scale) in spite of the shoddy attitude I had at the time. (I wish I had been a ham radio operator back then, because I would have been able to relate to what I was studying.)

A VERY important skill in postsecondary education is the ability to cut corners. There is NO WAY I could have maintained the perfectionism of my K-12 work in college or graduate school. There's so much work that there is NO WAY you can do it all perfectly. You MUST learn how to cut corners, or you'll bite the dust.

2:30 is perfectly normal bedtime here...i rarely get enough sleep, it's partially my own fault though
