I am planning to take Philos. 1, 2, 5, and 7 over the summer all at once. The professors for Philos 5 and 7 seem to give out a lot of A's. I am planning to do this because it's part of my pre-reqs and I can finish up IGETC during the fall semester (Just need physical non lab science). Classes would be from 8 AM til 4:50PM on M T W TH . Would this be too much work or is it doable if I'm aiming for straight A's? Im only concerned because I've heard philos courses would involve a lot of writing, and if I were to take 4 of them together...

I’ve taken Intro to Philo and it was time consuming. Although the teacher was very awesome and easy to get an A with (he once offered a 500 point extra credit assignment…it was hard, but I got it!) but the papers took a long time to write…I’m not sure about four…and that was intro!

I’m not sure I’d like doing that over my summer, but if you have no job, go for it. I did two classes last semester (philo being one of them) and it was M-Th 8-noon, not a big deal.

Good luck with everything! [:

what are the class titles?

i think you’d be stupid to do it.
it’d be EXTREMELY time consuming and likely more confusing than you might have anticipated.

without even knowing the titles of the classes, again, i strongly urge against it.
then again, some people on this forum are taking, or have taken, >25 units / semester… successfully… which trips me the **** out.

“…and that was intro!”

exactly.

how many hours of class a day is that? I think i’d die of sheer boredom after an hour of philosophy class. When i took philosophy during the summer last year i brought my laptop and played online poker for an hour and a half and then leave at break after the teacher took attendence and i turned in my homework.

If you have to do it. Do it. You got a do what you got a do. But if it is not absolutely necessary, i wouldn’t. Philos classes are pretty easy and kick back at my CC but have a lot of reading. And although a lot of A’s are given out, so are a lot of F’s. There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground where I’m at.

Sources: 6 philos classes taken, 6 A’s received.

Like the above said, it would probably be more time consuming/exhausting rather than hard. However, you did say two of those classes are “easy A’s,” I would say go for it if you had to

If you’re only taking these four classes, it shouldn’t be particularly hard. There’s no reason why a philosophy class would be more time consuming than, say, a writing or a math class.

you gotta try to take like 2 of them online and save yourself. it’s amazing! my cc as well as its 2 sister cc’s has so many online classes you should check them out, i know for a fact they have a bunch of phil. ones. just a suggestion. it will save you time and your boredom, doing online classes gives you freedom and ease to do it at your own pace while still meeting the teachers standards as far as tests and assignment dates. i took an entire semester online once, amazing.

some of them require orientations to be on campus, where are you located?

I go to Moorpark, but their sister college is Ventura college and this is one of the classes they offer online: Philosophy 1

I tried an online philosophy class, but it just wasn’t for me. I’ve taken other online classes and done fine in those, but I dropped philosophy after the second week because I knew I wouldn’t fit in with it.

i took intro to philo during the winter.

not recommend you doing this.
the philo classes are usually contain lots of readings and papers, and a short section class will be a killer for your GPA i guess

but in the other hand, philo class is a lot more fun than other classes i’ve take.

“There’s no reason why a philosophy class would be more time consuming than, say, a writing or a math class.”

it really depends on what you want out of it. if you want an A as well as a decent understanding of the material, in my experience, these classes have taken way more effort. english 101 and creative writing were a joke… i hate math, and yet i breezed through my last two math classes. i love philosophy, and ended up spending waaaaaaaaaaay more time with it. the thing about phil classes, especially the analytic ones, certain things that took me 10 hours to understand could take you 20 minutes / vice-versa.

to the OP, if philosophy is what you want to pursue, you’re better off spreading out your phil courses, showing persistant interest on your transcript and allowing yourself to gain a proper understanding rather than cram for your four midterms / finals that will all take place on the same days. i honestly can’t imagine it…
i took ‘modern’ and honors ‘ethics’ during spring '08 (my course load = 16 units) and had the finals on the same day… i pulled A’s, but nearly shat myself doing it.

PLUS, assuming this is your major, what happens if you get a B? what happens if you get 2 B’s? 3? 4? even worse, 3 A’s and a C? i don’t think it’s worth the risk.

what’s the rush, anyway?

last thing…

what’s with people saying that these classes are boring?
i may be a little biased, but i don’t understand, if you went anywhere further than ‘intro’, how you could find this stuff boring.
because…
like…

it isn’t.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. Philosophy is my major and I’m applying in November, so far I haven’t taken a single Philos course (I finished almost all my IGETC though)…thats why I am in a bit of a rush trying to get most done before I apply. I am thinking about taking an 8 week Philos 1 (intro) course online that starts in 2 weeks but I have to ask my counselor if I can add. If it is as much work as you guys say it is, I am def worried. I don’t mind reading but I suppose it is a bit extreme to take 4 at the same time. Gah… Im worried now. I really hope I can add that intro philos class! Then I can take 2 over the summer and 2 in Fall.

BTW:
PHILOS 1, Knowledge and Reality
PHILOS 2, Ethics
PHILOS 5, Contemporary Moral Conflicts
PHILOS 7, Logic and Critical Thinking
PHILOS 9, Symbolic Logic

Whats funny is Cal (which has none articulated courses for Philos), UCLA, and UCSD has the shortest list of pre-reqs. UCI seems to be a bit*ch about this pre-req thing with the longest list haha

BTW I haven’t been slacking off or anything, I took 16 units in Fall, 6 in Winter, 16 currently in Spring and not sure how much in Summer…depends on how I’m going to finish up on the courses. I hope I can make my Spring go up to 19 units so I can give my Summer a break… Summer classes = 6 weeks btw

if you can, do this:

now: phil 1 online

fall: 9, 2 and 7

spring: 5

I think I’ll try to go
Now: Phil 1 online (if possible)
Summer: Phil 2, 7
Fall: 9,5

One more question:
Is it worth it to do the UCLA TAP honors program? I got accepted into it recently, but I have until the end of Fall 09 to take 5 honors classes…meaning I have to take some over the summer and take most in the Fall. This might hurt my grade but it will give me a greater chance at UCLA. My target school, like most folks, is UC Berkeley though, so I don’t know what I should do.

I think you can do it!!! As long as you don’t work too many hours a week…I personally think the summer sessions are better than the regular semesters because of the fats pace. I always just want to get things overwith… I have taken 2 six-week winter sessions with 10 units each, and got As in all of those classes…and those were math, sciences, and languages I was taking. I’m sure philosophy won’t be as tediously time-consuming.

GO FOR IT!

re: your original question… in a nutshell, stupid. Most of the people on here who are advising you to “just got for it!” I’m sure haven’t taken multiple philosophy classes in one term, let alone six in a short intersession. If you don’t want to be tactful, then dive in, but expect 1-2 W’s and less than a 4.0.
