SMART Scholarship ?

The Mentalist
Did anyone see the Mentalist last night about biological warfare? It was so real and I think it could happen. We need more Biomedical Engineers to makes the the ancedotes!

Holy freaking random post there.^^^^^^

Has anyone heard anything regarding when awards will be announced?

The semi-finalist email mentioned award announcements close to the 31st of March.

I just got another e-mail from SMART saying :
" that you may be contacted to have a SMART Program Office interview. Please continue to monitor your email for such a notification. These interviews are scheduled to be conducted between March 22-26 and the email notifying Semi-Finalists of a designated interview date and time is scheduled to be sent on or about March 19. "

I don’t really know what this means in context of what everyone has been saying about getting phone interviews with one of the agencies.

This email is to inform you that you are a Recommended Semi-Finalist for an award under the SMART Program. Please be aware there are many more Recommended Semi-Finalists than available awards thus this email is not be construed as an award offer. Only official award notifications sent by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) are legally binding award offers. This is not an official award notification. No other offer, promise, or implied promise of an award made verbally or in writing constitutes a valid award offer.

NEXT STEP: Each Recommended Semi-Finalists is required to complete a phone interview with a SMART Program Office representative. This interview is mandatory. Candidates that do not complete the interview will be disqualified and removed from award consideration.

· Your interview has been scheduled for ?:??:00 PM on ???, March ??, 2010. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A PACIFIC STANDARD TIME. A representative will call you. If you are not available at this time, please contact ASEE at smart@asee.org.

Please note; the phone interview period is March 22-March 26, 2010. There are a limited number of interview times available. If you need to reschedule this appointment please contact ASEE immediately.

· Persons with disabilities requiring alternate interview arrangements should contact ASEE immediately so appropriate accommodations can be arranged.

· It is the applicant’s responsibility to be available the day, time, and at the phone number specified above or to contact ASEE to reschedule the appointment for an alternate time during the phone interview period.

We congratulate you on your success thus far.

If we have not received an email confirming that we have been selected for an interview by today, does this mean that we are out of the running?

The interviews appear to be for those that are on the top of the list for the award. This isn’t to say that if you didn’t get e-mail that you are out of luck. As the SPO moves down the list numbers change and needs get filled. As they fill those needs they will start moving into the alternates and interviewing them as needed. Like several have mentioned they were naming finalists up until July last year. I hate to say it but I wouldn’t count yourself out until orientation officially starts. I will post after my interview Monday and let everyone know what they say.

Ok, so they told me that this round of interviews are those that were recommended by some facility, and that this list is down to 400 ish. Also they said they still plan to award 300 or so awards. As for multiple facility selections that is all handled behind the scenes, we wont get a choice that’s what the preference list is for. If you are selected for the award it will state which facility you are assigned to. Beyond that it was all legal, and eligibility crap.

Hawk 2001… Can you tell us exactly what they asked you in the interview? Mine is set for tomorrow. Thank you

It was nothing more then making sure you understand what you would have to agree to do if you were selected as a finalist. Ie. geographically mobile, security clearance, quarterly degree plan, and what not. All the same stuff you had to agree to when you applied in the first place.

Talk about a letdown. I just got an email from NPS saying they would be notifying us if we have been cleared for secret clearance. Then received another email saying that the security specialist had received the wrong distribution list, and it had some folks on it who were not current SMART awardees. My assumption is this was meant for those who were 2009 awardees. But I’m wondering what the distribution list the security specialist got was for, notification of awards? Hmm i wonder.

I had my interview today; it was basically as described above. One thing that came up about being geographically mobile has me a little concerned. My interpretation was that this meant that you had to go to whatever lab they assigned you and that that was where you would stay for the entire period. Apparently it is possible to be assigned one place, and then something might change and you could be assigned to another facility. Does anyone have any information about how often this occurs? I wish I had asked the interviewer, but I didn’t think too.

That’s for the “if” situation. They intend to keep you with that facility for the duration, however; with budgets changing or what not they reserve the option to move you to where ever they see fit. It’s part of working for the government lol.

So although not getting an interview by now doesn’t mean we’re out of the running its a good bet that if we didn’t get one we’re probably not going to get the fellowship…

=( Sad panda. Very very sad panda.

Award letters are being sent today. Yes, we recognize the irony in sending these out on April Fools Day but that’s the way it goes. Applicants not recieving awards will be notified of thier status. All official award notifications are sent by ASEE. No other offer or implied offer of an award is valid. Thank you for your interest in the SMART Program.

Has anyone heard whether they have been accepted, or rejected, by the program?

(There are reports of acceptance on other sites, but I am specfically interested in what people who frequent this site have heard either positive or negative. Thank you.)

I have not received anything. Smartguide – did they send out notifications to those not selected as well as award letters to those who were?

I received the award along with several others. If you haven’t found it yet thesmartforum.org has a ton of information and people on it. Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations on those who are first round awardees. I just received the following email today:

"Thank you for applying for the SMART Scholarship. At this time all 1st round award notices have been sent. Depending on acceptance/decline rates the SMART Program Office may issue a 2nd round of award notices in mid April. All applicants will be notified of their final status by the end of April.

Again, thank you for your application and we will follow up with you as soon as we have more information."

Can anyone further elaborate on what exactly this means and does anybody know how many people received awards in the second rounds?

Thanks!
