SMC --> UC second semester transfer

Okay I'm confused. Let me preface this with a clarifying question. Do I need 60 units when I apply or do most CC students apply after their first year at 30 units or so on the promise that they will complete the 60 units + prereqs upon entry to their 4 yr university?

I'm a Santa Monica College Political Science student and I'm curious whether I can apply in Fall 2015 for second semester 2015 admittance to UCLA, UCSB, Cal, and maybe some private schools . I have 37 units right now and I'm pretty worried about applying in Fall 2014 with my lackluster gpa (2.85), so I'd rather have a strong second year and apply for the second semester to better my chances.

You need to have 60 units by the end of Spring 2015. If you have 37 already completed, assuming they’re all UC transferable, you should be in good shape.

Your GPA however is a whole other story. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t a 3.0 the minimum gpa requirement?

You just need 60 units completed by the end of spring before you transfer. Most apply after taking around 30ish.

And what is “second semester” admittance?

Your GPA is the problem, not your units. You need 60 completed by the end of this coming Spring to apply for Fall 2015 at UC. Applications are open now and you can submit it anytime in November. But, to be competitive at UCLA/Cal, you’ll need to be at about 3.4+ by the end of this Fall. That’s the GPA they use to make determinations. I just don’t see how you can raise your GPA to those numbers in one semester? Also, you have to take your major into consideration. There are only a handful (less than 5) majors that would make you competitive at 3.4. The rest, you will need to be even higher.

But that’s UCLA/Cal. There are several other UCs you could become competitive in if you can at least reach 3.2 and select one of the less competitive majors. Good luck.

Thank you for that.
@2016 Candles I think the application GPA bottom limit is pretty low and I would be able to apply, but very unlikely to get in until I got higher than a ~3.3. I was doing alright (~3.1) but just tanked this summer with a D in statistics and a B in my other class.

@k4201505 I think you can apply to enter at some schools in the second semester at a different deadline from the main deadline. I’ve heard the term thrown around before but I wasn’t exactly sure how it worked.

Merced used to have Spring Transfers but they’ve stopped that. Berkley has dim Spring transfers, but that’s basically overflow from Fall admits.

If you retake Stats, and earn a B, that could raise your gpa quite a bit.

I agree my GPA is an issue. I expect my essay will be well received but I have no ECs of note and a bad GPA so I’m pretty much boned.

I also just found a page on the UC site indicating that the winter/spring admissions I was referring to are closed for 2015 at all campuses. Pretty bummed out now.

Do UC schools consider good post-Fall grades with much significance? If not I can only hope Winter/Spring admission opens back up for 2016.

Grades earned after the grade update in January are not considered. You can apply this fall if you don’t mind spending the money on apps, but I don’t think you really have a chance at UCs- including Merced. With a low gpa and no ECs, what are you offering them?

Maybe you should buckle down this year, and focus on applying next year after you’ve raised your gpa to 3.3+

^ what he said.
