My D got into Mount Holyoke, UVA and waitlisted at Smith today. Still waiting to hear from Barnard.

Rejected.

I don’t even know what to say.

ACCEPTED!

I kept refreshing the page because I was scared that I was unreal and just a mistake but after 20 refreshed … I finally realized that I have gotten in.

So surprised because my friend with high stats, SAT score, and is legacy got waitlisted and I got in.

Everyone who got waitlisted, it’s alright … there are other colleges out there and you all still have a chance!

Note to waitlistees. Maybe this should be a separate thread.

Don’t give up hope.

First, honestly decide: if Smith gave you an acceptance off the waitlist, would you go?

If the answer is “Yes” or any variant like “Hell, yes!”, then proceed as follows. If you are uncertain, do not do this.

Let them know that they’re your first choice. Make their job easy. “If accepted, I will come.” While doing so, convey your enthusiasm for Smith in concrete terms as to what you’re looking forward to. The answer is unique to every applicant so I won’t give a template here.

Submit additional material. Good 3Q grades, late awards, anything. For one young lady a year ahead of my D, I wrote a recommendation letter. Her mother is Russian and isn’t confident of her written English but I was happy to fill in a quasi-avuncular gap. This was a young woman whom I had had in a car pool for something like five years and I knew here well, strengths and weaknesses both. My letter acknowledged some weaknesses but described what I saw as her potential and how the Smith environment could bring the best out in her. (I was right.) She was admitted and not only that but also had very good financial aid (single mom, modest income, not “low” but definitely “modest”).

So, if you want it, go for it. And good luck.

I got in!!! <3 :)

Btw, if faithfa’s D’s experience is any indicator, this is a tough year. Getting into UVA isn’t chopped liver. Into UVA and waitlisted at Smith…wow. Very tough.

I was waitlisted… hmmm…strategy?

Waitlisted. I was on a roll for a while and then I hit waitlist city.

Got rejected from BC (my first rejection) and waitlisted at Smith and Bryn Mawr. I’m only waiting on BU and Barnard now.

I’m afraid to be excited because Unv. of Rochester didn’t give me any aid, and if Smith doesn’t give me any I most definitely can’t go… I’ll hold in my excitement until I get my letter.

Anyone in the same boat as me?

^memememememe

I’ve got enough merit at my safety but I’d really like to go to Smith, Wellesley, or Whitman…but it’s all about the dough.

@ryanghee0223

Oh man girl, don’t get down on yourself about one lame-o college. You have a really strong spirit and the drive to not only get over Smith, but to move on to something bigger and better for you. That’s not a compensation, you will go somewhere fantastic.

@teecee

I second the weirdness of admissions this year. I had a sister who got into Hamilton and I just got on the waitlist of no return even though I thought I had strong stats (well, besides my SAT anyway). So I think fit really does come into play here for a lot of selective LAC’s especially.

@melivia

Add me to that boat. I got some terrible fin aid from MoHo and am praying for more from Smith. I hate feeling like I can afford the education I want.

Rejected.
It was devastating, I literally crumpled to the ground (in a truly dramatic fashion) and cried for about two hours straight.
Smith is my dream school, and is tied for my top choice along with Middlebury (and my admission to Middlebury is a pipe-dream at best.)
Congratulations to all of you who got accepted – I really wish I was joining you.

Guys~

I got so excited that I already sent in my deposit. :D

Also for those rejected, please don’t lose hope. I have a friend who was only accepted by his safety school but after he went there he seems to love the school. You never know so dont lose hope!!

melivia (and all others for whom Financial Aid is a concern)-

I know I’m over in Reject City, but as an area resident, I just wanted to let you know that Smith meets need. Meaning, if you get in, they will give you enough grants/loans/work study to bring the COA down to your EFC. :] Smith really desires to make attendance possible for all of it’s accepted students!

Reminder: Smith will determine their own EFC, not necessarily use the one FAFSA determined.

^ good to know.

I hope that means generous aid…

Just got my Smith letter–the aid was great! Better than Moho’s! And I’ve just been waitlisted for Wellesley so it’s lookin like Smith is happening! Friday–rejected from Vassar, get into Smith; Saturday–get waitlisted at Wellesley, get great aid at Smith–why must my every victory be accompanied by a disappointment? I can’t feel all the way happy for some reason.

@Mockingbird I am so very proud of you for all you have accomplished. Although this is a bit of a setback, you have great things in store for you! You got a great aid package at a teriffic school. We can now call you a “Smithie” Way to go girl!

anyone know how long it takes for the official letter to come in the mail? i’ve seen my decision online but i need to know how the FA turns out. wish california wasn’t all the way on the the other side of the country. good luck to all!

DD got her’s today…but Cali may be a different set of encyclopedias. So you know, the FA looks very good!
