hello, i'm currently a high school senior and i'm hoping to attend smu next year. the waiting process is killing me and i was just hoping to gain some insight from those who have already been admitted. what were your credentials like? i know smu has become much more competitive in recent years and i'm a little nervous. i have decent grades, low test scores, and fairly good extra-curriculars...
summary of my high school resume: 3.75 unweighted gpa, every honors class my school offered (we don't have ap's), 1700 sat (low i know), class president, three college classes at cu boulder with a's in all of them, varsity tennis, varsity cheerleading, state champion, hospital volunteer, jdrf volunteer, and i'm spending a semester in russia- i'll be fluent in russian before my freshmen year.
was anyone with similar credentials admitted? i'm just so curious :)

I think that SAT score may kill you… Anything below 2,000 just doesn’t seem competitive to me. Did you at least do particularly well in one section? Why didn’t you retake?

Also, what do you want to major in at SMU?

that’s kind of what i assumed. i know it’s a weak score. i was planning on retaking the test last semester, but i ended up staying in new york city instead. it’s a long story, but anyways, i would like to double major in russian area studies and political science. my parents wanted me to apply to cox, but i didn’t even bother with my sat scores. i don’t know if this would help, but my weighted gpa is a 4.1 as of last semester (i just checked it yesterday). did you apply to smu?

I sure hope you get in; you sound amazing!

oh, well thank-you violetsky <3

I disagree with captain88. Although your test scores aren’t great, your extra-curricular and ability in Russian is impressive! Also, the fact that you took/are taking honors shows you’re a hard worker. Plus the volunteer stuff… I’m impressed.

To give you an idea of my credentials though: 4.0 unweighted GPA with AP classes, non-varsity volleyball, class president one year, NHS vice president, Band president two years, 1960 SAT, 33 ACT, And spent one month in Spain last summer as study abroad (although I’m not fluent yet :P)… I lack volunteer things. (I’ve been accepted early action.)

Anyway, I’m impressed. Some people are just freak out with tests. Good luck!

I’m actually a senior at SMU right now… So, while kortkneee may choose to disagree with me, I’ve been through the admissions process before.

I applied back in 2005 for fall 2006 and had a score around 2000. Back then, that was pretty much guaranteed admission - plus, I’m a scholarship athlete. A lot has changed at SMU since then. I’ve known a few kids who have gotten rejected with great scores and ECs.

But, I really don’t think all is lost. Your ECs are good and you seem very well-rounded. Also, you don’t necessarily have to apply to Cox before your freshman year. You can come into SMU, take the business subset classes and then apply to Cox after your first semester or even second.

Looks to me that most schools would be glad to have a student with the qualifications of teddyvoughn. Being fluent in Russian is pretty rare for an incoming freshman.

When I attended the orientation session last summer with my daughter I remember the SMU people were very proud of the list of diverse accomplishments their new class brought to the campus. Spending a summer in Russia seems like something the admission committee would really be impressed by. Be sure and stay in contact with your admission counselor - they definitely look more favorably on the students who express excitement about attending.

Don’t let other people freak you out, I’m sure you’ll get in. I got accepted with a 3.4 unweighted (Honors when possible, 3 AP classes) 2160 SAT, ASB & Investment Club Treasurer, NHS, no Varsity sports, and a normal amount of volunteer work.

Sorry its taken me so long to respond everyone. I have internet in Moscow but we have strange time frame limitations. Its a little bit circa 1980’s. Anyways, normally my internet frame lapses before I get passed emails so that’s why my presence on college confidential hasn’t been the greatest. I actually just got an email from my mom yesterday and I got waitlisted. I talked to a few people about it and the general theme was 1 in every 6 people waitlisted gain admission. I’m not sure if that’s correct or not, so please tell me if their wrong. That tip about staying in touch with my guidance counselor will actually be very useful- especially now, so thabkyou. <3 Does anyone know the general rate for waitlisted students and if they are accepted? How many students are originally admitted? How many students accept admission? Then how many spots are available for waitlisted students? How many students do they put on the waitlist? I know some schools go way above and beyond. Thanks for all your help!

^^ Teddyvoughn-- I wrote about this on the thread called “Deferred from SMU”. Scroll down the forum until you find that thread, and read post #4. (I know there’s a way to link to another post and I would do it if I knew how. Sorry about that.)
