SMU vs BU Pre-Med

Hi all, I am a senior looking to go into a biology/pre-med program with a minor in finance. I have been looking and doing research about both these schools and I really can not get a sense. I know BU (Boston University) is more respected in the sciences and has more to do with that, but I do not know if it is truly worth close to $40,000 more when it comes to merit scholarships. Thanks in advance for any help!

Run the numbers and talk the results over with whoever it is who is helping you pay for your education. Med schools don’t care where you did your undergrad work. They care about your GPA, your MCAT score, and that you meet their requirements for medical related job shadowing/volunteering. Med schools also are fiendishly expensive. Any money you can avoid spending on your undergrad degree will come in handy when it is time to pay for med school.

I’m at smu message me if you have questions

No, it’s not worth it.
Where have you been admitted and what’s the net cost* at each?

*(Room, board, fees, tuition)-(granrew scholarships)=

Hey, I just got into both as well. But chose to decline both offer of admissions.
But in honest opinion, they are both great private schools and with that said also crazy expensive.

SMU with 60K
Boston with 70K. Considering that you would have to pay Boston 40K more than you would at SMU, go with SMU.

There’s less debt for you at the end of the first 4 years which is great since you would have to get your doctorates degree for another 4 more years. That’s 8 years of college debt. It’s too expensive if you have to pay 40K more for Boston for just the first 4 years. Go to the school that is the cheapest first to get a strong foundation and so you are sure about your major.

I love BU tho. Great pre-med program. Just not worth 40K more.

SMU all the way
If you check on line, BU is really hard on premed GPA and you will get better results from SMU.

Medical schools will view these schools the same. I would pick SMU.

Have you thought about an in-state school?

I have been admitted to both SMU and TCU for Business / Accounting. How is your experience with SMU and would you go there again if you were doing it all over again?

SMU is a great school and you can go to med school from there, so no, I don’t think BU is worth $40K more.

@wilsonnb SMU has been an excellent institution and mostly I compete for jobs with A&m honors, Ut McCombs, and TCU honors kids. I am a below average finance student SMU has had the best opportunities for sure. Loved the experience wish I could do a few more years.
