so about that...

So I got a letter saying I have to take the UCSC Writing Placement Examination on May 8th and this is really sucky timing because I have something planned on that day! haha I could possibly get out of my plans and I read on the website that they strongly recommend you take the test in May since it helps pick your core class or something like that. So i guess my question is if anyone has had experience skipping the May testing and taking the exam during welcome week. Do you think it's fine and wont affect anything or do you recommend me taking it in may?

Thanks! :]

I have that too and its on prom day. :(

I had read somewhere that you’re unable to pick higher level English courses during orientation if you don’t take the test in May.

Not sure about anything else, though. :S

You should be fine if you don’t take it on May, but I wouldn’t risk it. I think the system automatically places you in to a course, so you should be fine on that aspect. Basically your score picks your core class. Basically the structure for me last year for College Ten was like this:

If you do decent, you get put in the College Ten 80A course. Once you finish that course, you still have to take a course called Writing 2. After that you need to take a course (usually major-related) which is an upper-division writing course (the W requirement).

OR: If you pass the writing test, you get put in College Ten 80B Course. After that, you just need to take the upper-division writing (no Writing 2 needed).

If you somehow score REALLY low, I think you get put in some type of remedial course and I have no clue how that works.

Not sure about the brackets for these, but.
Low score: You did not pass the ELWR via the exam, so you take a remedial core course (still called 80A) and test again at the end of the quarter. Pass, go on to writing 2. Don’t pass? No clue.
Middle score: ELWR passed, take core 80A to fulfill C1, go on to writing 2 for C2.
Higher score: ElWR and C1 fulfilled. Enroll in 80B course, writing 2 is not required.

You can also place out of the ELWR via certain other test scores. Such as:

a score of 680 or more on the College Board SAT Reasoning Test (Writing section)

a score of 30 on the ACT Combined English/Writing test

a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement English Language or Literature exam

I think a high enough AP score means you place out of C1 as well. If you have passed the ELWR but not C1 as well, they may tell you to take the writing placement test anyhow. In that case you can take it if you’d like to try to place out of C1, but the test is no required.

thanks everybody for the feedback! :]
@sofaraway sorry about the prom issue that sucks! do you know what you’re going to do?
anddd i think i’m leaning towards just taking the test in may  so I can get it over with.

Yeah. I’m going to take the test and after get ready for prom all day lol.
Anyone know how long the test is?

It’s around 2 hours, I think.

I would suggest you take the test in May because if you don’t you could potentially not be able to enrolled in your core course at orientation and have to wait until a later date in order to.

The test itself is early in the morning and they give you 2 hours to complete it but if you complete before then, you can just leave.
