So bad is NYU's financial aid?

I have heard a plethora of stories concerning NYU's financial aid. Is it really as bad as everyone claims?

My family makes around 40-45k a year, if that's a determining factor.

Thanks

Would like to know this also, in the case of transfers. Thanks.

Unless there has been dramatic changes over the last few years, it is that bad according to several recent NYU grads. Moreover, from my own experience as an admitted applicant and from observing many high school classmates who attended, not much seems to have changed as FA sucked back then as well. A reason why I chose a top SLAC which offered a near-full ride scholarship.

NYU doesn’t give a lot of aid in terms of cutting down your costs - instead, kids are most often offered loans to take out. In the long term, these loans will build up into over $100k debts which can definitely be a burden on many people.

My husband has lost his job between my daughters freshman and sophmore year. Our FASFA went to $0; her grants, scholarships and loans amounts didn’t change. She is at Tisch, Film/TV. There are some schools that do offer full ride scholarships but Tisch must not have many if any at all. Her freshman GPA was 4.0 and she didn’t recieve any additional scholarships her sophmore year when the family financial situation changed. She was able to get the maximum on Pell grants but that was it.
