So confused...

Hi!

I'm hoping someone here might be able to offer some insight =) I'll try to make this as short as possible, but I'm not sure if I can explain everything without making a huge long post!

OK, so this is my story: I graduated high school in 2005 and went to a university (not USF) in the fall of 2005. I did not do well there, didn't really take it seriously and got horrible grades. I attended that university for 2 years, and then I took a couple years off to work & figure out what I was doing. When I left that university, my overall GPA was 1.9. Since 2011, I have been taking classes at Pasco-Hernando Community College. In June, I turned in my application & transcripts for admission to USF in January 2013. The transcript PHCC sent to USF states that my PHCC GPA is 3.64 and my overall GPA is 2.7.

I haven't heard anything back from USF, so I called today and the man I spoke with said that I cannot be admitted for the upcoming spring semester because they have my overall GPA as 2.3. He couldn't really explain why PHCC thinks I have a 2.7 and USF thinks I have a 2.3, so I'm really confused. He suggested that I wait until I complete my AA degree (December) and then try submitting my transcripts again. He said that if I have my AA I should be able to get in for the summer semester, but I won't be able to get into the College of Business with a 2.3. I had a 4.0 over the summer semester and am currently enrolled in the fall semester at PHCC, so my GPA should be a tiny bit higher by the time I graduate from PHCC, but I don't know if those 2 semesters will raise my GPA enough.

Does anyone know why USF calculated my GPA so much lower than what PHCC did? Is there anyone else I can speak with at USF to get further clarification, because the man I talked with was kind of confusing and also very short with me. I'm pretty upset, because while a 2.7 isn't exactly a good GPA, I thought I would be able to transfer without a problem. thanks!

If I were you the first place I’d go with all you explained above is to see your academic advisor at PHCC to get help sorting this all out. PHCC is a feeder school to USF and has sent tons of students on to USF–your PHCC advisor should know the USF ropes and should be able to get you on the most direct path to USF admission. PHCC even has an agreement with USF for guaranteed admission to USF from PHCC to its A.A. graduates. You’re paying PHCC a lot of money in tuition and fees-- some of that money is what pays the advisors–it’s their paid job to help you with stuff like this.

Your GPA might have not included non-transferable courses you’ve completed in past, could be repeated courses jumbled up your GPA calculation, etc.–get your PHCC advisor to help you figure it out. Too, PHCC advisors are in regular contact with USF admissions–your advisor should be able to pick up phone and get answers from USF readily. Also, many of the upper division colleges at USF like the Business College have competitive admissions–you’ll be knocking heads with other students for admission into limited available seats. Good Luck!

Thanks for your response! You’re right, I should go talk to someone at PHCC about this. I’ll do that Monday and see what happens. Thanks :)

Update… finally got it figured out. USF won’t accept any of the online classes I took at PHCC. I got A’s and B’s in all the online classes I took which boosted my GPA at PHCC, but since USF won’t accept them, they’re not counting towards my GPA and that’s why it’s lower than I thought. The man I spoke with at the admissions office was very nice and helpful, and said that once I submit my grades from the summer and the current fall semester at PHCC, my GPA should be above a 2.5. He thinks I should be able to get accepted for the Spring semester, even thought they won’t receive my final transcripts until December.

I just wish I knew that online classes wouldn’t transfer to USF. The classes I took online are some of the required classes to be accepted into the College of Business, so I have to take them again at USF. If I had known this, I wouldn’t have taken them online! Now I get to waste a semster (and money) taking classes I’ve already taken. I’m really surprised that PHCC doesn’t tell students about this! So frustrating.
