Don't ask why, because I really don't want to explain...it's a long story.

But here's the issue. In the 'additional information' part of the commonapp I decided to elaborate further as to why I am interested in Lafayette. I went into great detail and pretty much gave away (to my other colleges) that Lafayette is my first choice.

As I said, I would really prefer not explaining, but I was effectively trapped into submitting a version of my main commonapp (with the information about Lafayette) to 7 of my 8 other colleges I'm applying to.

There was no way to change it...I HAD to send it to those colleges and I've already done so (it had to do with the fact that I had already submitted the supplement to those colleges, which disallowed me to change the main part of the commonapp).

What can I do? Can I contact my colleges and explain? How?

Wow, i’m certainly sorry to hear that. I’d say the best thing you can do is to contact these colleges and tell them you made a mistake. Did you say things about how Lafayette was better than your other schools?

call the other colleges, explain your electronic mistake and ask if you can submit a one-page replacement to the Additional Info section of the CA. Most colleges will understand.

Your wrong there is a way to change it. In the FAQs of the Common App, there is a link that allows you to create multiple copies of the common app, move your schools to the other version, and change things in that version.

You can’t unring a bell. If you walk up to your teacher and call him an @$$hole, you can’t be like, “oh sorry, can I submit a replacement comment?”.

I mean, you should definitely contact your other colleges and explain the mistake, but there’s really no way to undo it short of mind control or time travel.

I think you should have asked for help before you submitted. I don’t see why you HAD to submit the same app to all of them.

I submitted most of my supplements well before the applications. After that, I made 3 different versions of the common app and submitted them accordingly.

You couldn’t change the main common app but there is away to make different versions after. People do it all the time.

Sorry about what happened though, and good luck

Don’t worry about it. I did the exact same thing. Just email all the colleges and say that you made a mistake and give them a revised and correct version. Most if not all will respond with, “We will put this in your file and will not look at the previous version.”

You sure? Common App says “If you have elected to have multiple versions of your Common Application, please be sure to submit your supplement using the Common App version with which you want it affiliated. If you have not yet identified which version of the Common App it should be connected to, then you should wait to submit until that time.”

Ditto. You should try and salvage it, but even though the college admissions people may promise to not take it into consideration, humans are subjective and imperfect so they can’t completely forget about it.

It’s kind of like in a court case where even if the judge orders a comment to be withdrawn and stricken from the record and for the jury to not consider that comment, the comment will still leave an impression on the jury.

i went to a financial aid session for nyu and a boy with a similar situation did the same thing for the common app and sent in his essay of his ever dying love for the school to all his schools :x The admissions officer looked at him liked he had four heads then smirked and asked why on earth he would do such a thing. he said it was an accident, but from her facial expression i could tell she wasn
t too happy. bottom line she said the essay was already submitted and even if it had another college
s name , but was still a darn good written essay that he would be okay.

she didn`t sound too confident, but you should definitely call and explain!

Hopefully I get accepted by Lafayette. They accept 64% early decision (the ED pool is actually weaker than the RD pool) and I did apply early decision after all.

But if I’m denied by Lafayette, I’m screwed, lol.

I’ll try to do what you guys recommended, but it probably won’t do much…

Contact Lafayette and let them know that you are so driven and passionate about attending their school, that you compromised every other application you sent out with encomiums to Lafayette–that’s how much you are sure you are Lafayette material!

dont worry. i made the same mistake for the first skl i sent. i talked abt how much i loved bc on the additional part of my safety…and thts pretty scary
but the funny thing is i got into my safety (even w/ scholarship money!) and deferred from bc…so u never know
