fight fight fight!!! lol :)

yeh man we havent gotten sick of that lolol  [/cynic] :):):)

i signed up for session 103. i was wondering how the enrollment in classes work. do we do it on our own time on day 3 or do we have the counselors there with us? i don't have a laptop, so do you think it would be okay if i shared one with my friend?

the counselors have computers for you guys to use, they'll teach you how to do it and you'll be fine.

Is there an advantage to having a laptop?

God yes! Bring your laptop. It makes planning your schedule less stressful! If not, go home after your last day and fix/plan your classes at home in case it's too frustrating to figure out a schedule.

ummm to check for your classes? a lot of people don't use CC and they wait until orientation to decide what they going to take and plan out their schedule so don't really count on a lot of time at computer lab, but if you don't have a laptop it is not that bad since you can try to borrow one from your roommates or something to check if the classes you wanted are full, then when you are ready to sign up just use your OC's computer to do it

i had my laptop with me and let me tell you i'm SO GLAD I TOOK IT.

i didn't worry about the computer lab being full, looked up classes on my own time, and even went back and changed stuff. you can also log onto facebook or something and use meebo to chat with people :)

remember to take an ethernet cable too if you want to use it in your room; the lounges are wireless, but i didn't even go to the lounge lol

oh, and if i hadn't taken it, i wouldn't have been able to post what we did at the end of each day ;)

Yeah, I must say I appreciated you having a laptop, Jeyday! :)

When it comes to enrolling in classes, is that on the OC's computer(s) only? Is the laptop only for planning stages?

EDIT: And is it safe to leave the laptop in your room at orientation?

Thanks for all the help!

the third day at 9:00am when the enrollment opened, we HAD to be there with our whole group at the OC's dorm room. we signed up for classes there, since it was the first time and all, in case anything came up/problems arose. but after that you can go to your room and change ANYTHING.

i used my laptop for both planning and signing up. heck, after i signed up with the OC, i went back to my room and dropped all of the classes and retook them. you can still do that the day you get home, the day after, etc. as a matter of fact i'm STILL doing that... if you read my "freshman schedule" thread you'll see what i mean haha. apparently my schedule isn't working out in my favor :(

IMO, it is safe to have your laptop in the room, just know who your roomies are. and keep in mind that the bathroom is shared so the people in the other room who you share a bathroom with can get in your room too. i left my laptop on the desk when i left the room, and it all worked out okay.

hope this helps!

Yes, thanks. I was just thinking about whether if I brought my laptop I could sign up RIGHT at 9, rather than wait in a line for another computer, thus gaining a teeny time advantage. Who knows if it will even be necessary, but for my peace of mind it's good to know. :)

Thanks Jeyday, this post is really helpful because I am going to orientation next week. I'm so excited now!

when we met at 9:00 am to sign up, we were 9 people and two computers. the people who were waiting for a chance were telling my OC "can i go back to my room and just sign up from there?? i brought a laptop!" my OC said "you can but they want it done here first." so she didn't let anyone; they aren't allowed to. some people signed up and went to their room right after to make changes if necessary. so no you can't do it RIGHT at 9.

you guys SHOULD be excited!! seriously take advantage of all that's available to you at orientation because this experience happens only once! i want to go back... lol

so there isn't a enrollment appointment time period for first years? it sucked because the EE class I wanted opened a new discussion between my first pass and 2nd pass, when my 2nd pass rolled around the new discussion was full

I can't wait for Winter quarter and a priority appointment!

some OCs will let you sit in their room with your laptop and sign up right at 9. and once you are able to sign up for classes, you can continue futzing with your schedule until friday of second week (read: october).

if you guys bring a laptop... BRING A LOCK!!! it is a good habit to get into, locking up your laptop. you are the sole person responsible for it. i suggest a lock with a key because those are less problematic than the combo ones. but bring it. and use it. and continue to lock it up throughout the year.

how about changing majors? when is there time to do that? i wanna go from the physical sciences department to the life sciences.

My OC let me sign up for classes myself. He said the only way it's fair is if I do it outside his room and I can't ask him for help. Other than that, my classes were all signed up by 9:02 AM =)

However I went back to his room at 9:10 AM and all 9 of the people in my group were done. So they do get it done quickly, so not much to worry about there.
