For the people that live far away from UCSD (faraway, as in a 7+ hour drive), how are you going to get to UCSD? Are you going there by plane, car, bus, bike, walk, etc?

i also want to know. i live in san francisco bay area and haven't a car at the moment, and my parents don't want to drive for such a long distance, so which are the means to go to UCSD, taking how long and the cost for each?

thanks !

A person on another thread is planning on mailing their car from San Jose. LOL

Sorry that didn't answer your question but I thought that was funny. :)

i'm also from the bay area... and wow I never thought of this...
THIS just might be a problem... :(
Maybe if my parents love me, at all, they'll drop me off???

take the train---it's a pretty ride, anyway

The airport is a bit of a drive. Is there a shuttle service?

takin the big-ol' van. it'll probably the last time i drive it for a while heh

Train. Definately. It'll take all day but it's not expensive.

I agree with Caro, and that's what I was planning to do. But I've never been on a train before (i know...my sheltered nerdiness), and I live about 2 hours away...how long would it take from SD? and how would we get from UCSD to the train station?

http://www.amtrak.com

You can travel Amtrak to San Diego. Click on "stations" to find a train station near you. From the San Diego train station you can take the trolley and/or bus to UCSD. It's reall easy. Also, if you plan on taking the train often you can sign up for Amtrak Guest Rewards.

thanks reachtheday. that helps a lot!

no trolley to ucsd. take the 101 bus from the Oceanside Amtrak station, it'll drop you off along gilman drive on campus. it'll be a major pain with all your bags though ;).

It is true the trolley doesn't go near UCSD, but the Coaster does. You can switch from Amtrack to the Coaster and get off at the UCSD (I think it's the Sorrento Valley station.) The bad part is once you change from Amtrack to the Coaster you have to carry all of your own stuff. The good thing, there are shuttles from the Coaster station to UCSD campus. The Coaster is the commuter train that travels between Oceanside and San Diego. It is not at all like Bart in the Bay Area, not as convenient. You can get Coaster info at www.nctd.com.
If you fly into SD, the airport is 10-15 miles south of UCSD. Your best option is a shuttle. Try Cloud Nine at www.cloudnineshuttle.com.
You can get other information on San Diego at www.signonsandiego.com. That sight can link you to a lot of others. GOOD LUCK! :)

the closest train station that I know of to UCSD is the solana beach station, its just north of ucsd

I'm goin' in a UHaul with all of my personal belongings in the back.

The Coaster does have a Sorrento Valley station but it may have limited service, like Mon-Fri only. It is the closest to UCSD. Solana Beach is the next closest, a few miles to the north. the correct link for transit info is:
www.sdcommute.com. Sorry for the wrong previous site.

CA2006, it's faster to go straight to the bus, or hire a taxi once you're at ocenaisde. My roommmate takes the train home every other week...and yeah.

I've used cloud nine shuttle a couple times and it's pretty useful. However, it's only going to work well if you have a couple check in bags...it is, after all, a shared shuttle. It works great for breaks though. if your flight timing is before the UCSD holiday airport shuttles start running.

Also check out http://www.sdcommute.com/ - gives you bus routes as well as times and directions from point to point.

:)

My friend and I are gonna carpool.

Im going to end up flying out...it will take a few days to drive from colorado. (lol). Hopefully there is a way to ship my stuff out so its easier to move in.
