So I made a mistake...

Yesterday I finished submitting the FAFSA online for 2008-2009. Only problem is that I am planning on going to school in the Fall of 2009. I didn't notice that the 2008-2009 school year only goes up to June 30th '09 until after I finished.

Will they just cancel the application for me? I'm not going to be using financial aid from it so it's a waste to even process the thing.

It will process because students starting in the spring or summer terms can still apply for aid but will not have a negative affect on you. It is not a problem as fortunately you realized what you have done (a student last year did not realize he had filed the wrong one until well after his school/state deadlines and missed out on a lot of aid). You should go ahead and complete the 2009-2010 one which is not available until Jan 1. Many schools require FAFSA to be filed for consideration for merit aid plus there are some federal loans (such as the unsub Stafford) which are available even if there is no financial need but you must file FAFSA to be eligible for them.

When the 2009/2010 form becomes available it will give you an option of retrieving a lot of your personal info Data from the 2008-2009 FAFSA so you will not have to re enter everything.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't want to end up receiving aid that could've gone to another person actually attending college.

Also, I might need to make corrections on that application. Should I still or not bother?

Don't bother. The 2008-2009 application will have no impact on your 2009-2010 financial aid. You will not be given any aid if you are not in school in the 2008-2009 school year.

Thank you :)
